Hi there!  Welcome to my stop on the UNEXPECTED Blog Tour organized by AToMR!

17728607Book Description:
Ian wasn’t ready to meet Grace Holtsen. In no way was he prepared for her. But can you ever be ready for fate to step in? Can you ever be ready to meet the one person who will change your entire existence? Ian knew that Grace would change everything he was used to, but something about her made it worth it. For the first time somebody seemed worth the risk. Will Ian jump and let fate wait for him at the bottom? Hoping that it can somehow save him…hoping that Grace can somehow save him.

I don’t think Grace is like most girls.
Maybe that’s the thing that I can’t put my finger on.
Maybe for the first time, I’ve met a girl that’s unlike
anyone that I’ve ever known.

Grace, a single mother and owner of a Nashville recording company, met Ian Paul, a recent college grad and her new employee. The moment he entered her world, it turned upside down. She knew better than anyone that a relationship with Ian would never work. He was never supposed to fit into her life, and she was never supposed to show up in his. But what happened between them was something more than either of them ever anticipated. Grace was unprepared for how bad it would hurt when they were faced with something far more unexpected.

He stole the rest of my heart tonight. I
know that no matter what happens tomorrow, or days from
now, I’ll never want it back.
I could never give it to someone else.

My Review:

Whoa. I loved the slow build of this one. Grace Holtsen’s worked hard for her thriving recording business in Nashville. She treasures her son, Milo, an unplanned memento of Grace’s first time brought back from a family vacation. She has a tense relationship with her parents–who pretty much kicked her out when she decided to keep her baby. Brash and sassy BFF Nina is a fantastic counterpoint to Grace’s reserved nature.

In fact, it’s Nina’s audacity that links Ian and Grace when Nina schmoozes Ian into pumping their gas, despite his not working at the gas station. Imagine Grace’s astonishment when Ian turns up at the company pow-wow an hour later as the new PR hire. *face palm*

Ian Paul’s in Nashville because his BFF is in a band–and it’s a good one. He’s been managing their PR throughout college and now that the sheepskins have been passed, the boys are set to take the music scene by the throat. Ian convinces Grace to hear one of their sets, and she’s captivated–has to sign them–and put Ian in charge as their manager.

While working in close quarters it’s clear that an attraction is developing. Grace hasn’t had a serious relationship in a good long time, and she’s not sure taking a chance on a strapping young buck is a great idea.  Ian is a hit with Milo–being the superhero step-dad-type–and he’s wooing Grace thoroughly regardless of their  6-year age gap.

It seems life is going grand for this fledgling couple until Grace visits Ian’s childhood home and learns a secret that may drive her and Ian apart forever.

So, I liked it. It’s a solid contemporary romance. The journal-like chronicling makes for an intimate ride. There was a point when I felt that the convenience v. coincidence battle was too much the former, but for those who love the “destined to be together” tales UNEXPECTED is right in your sweet spot.

Welcome to another pre-Halloween SPOOKTACULAR inspired read. This feature is a RURAL fantasy. Ha! Coined a new subgenre right ‘ere! It’s like an urban fantasy, but the setting is rural—so, yeah…

13513078Anyhoo, Stephanie Rowe’s DARKNESS AWAKENED is not a vamp tale. It’s not an angel tale, either. It is a romantic adventure with paranormal elements, however, and that caught my eye.

Here’s what happens:

Quinn Masters isn’t just a Calydon warrior—he’s a member of the Order of the Blade—an elite fighting unit charged with keeping the peace between Calydonians and hiding their existence from the human population. Order members are virtually immortal—Quinn is over 500 years old—but they are forbidden to take mates. See, for Order members, mating women is to invite madness. Never a good idea to have lunatic assassins on the loose, methinks. While on a training mission in the untamed Oregon forests, Quinn’s team of new recruits is slain by one of his own—Elijah, a trusted mentor and friend.

When he recovers from his injuries, Quinn discovers Grace Matthews waiting on his doorstep. Grace knows revealing her presence is tantamount to a death sentence—Illusionists like herself have been hunted to near extinction—but she needs Quinn’s help to rescue her sister Ava from a malevolent being—the same one who turned Elijah on his fellow Calydonians. Quinn doesn’t realize Grace’s Illusionist powers at first, but he certainly apprehends her feminine powers—the attraction between them has it’s own GPS signal for goodness sake!—so he’s anxious to send Grace on her merry way.

Of course, when Quinn’s home is attacked with them trapped inside, he and Grace become unlikely partners in order to escape. And, it turns out, Grace is able to track Ava’s Illusions so she has value in finding Elijah before he goes psycho yet again.

On the quest for Elijah and Ava, the attraction between Grace and Quinn blossoms.  So much so that the Order is ready to terminate Grace to save Quinn from mating madness. Good thing she can conjure Illusions to protect herself!

The plot is active and the voice is playful. It’s not too hot and spicy, but it’s clearly got strong romantic elements. I loved the banter between Quinn and Grace. This is the first in a series and we get a good look at several Order members upon which the continuing plot rests.

Now and Then (Now #1)

by Brenda Rothert

Available now!
Summary from Goodreads:
Now and Then (Now, #1)Now: Emmaline Carson is a sharp, settled graphic designer who loves painting, cooking and girls’ night out with her older sister Layla. But then – in the years before she went to art school in Paris – she was a shy, awkward teenager with frizzy hair, a flat chest and a massive crush on the boy across the street, Cole Marlowe. Too bad her incredibly hot neighbor only had eyes for Layla.

Cole is now a confident, laid-back attorney who’s even hotter than he used to be. He’s planning to stay single while working his way up the corporate ladder – until he’s knocked off course by a chance run-in with Emma.

Everything is different between Cole and Emma now. He finally sees her in a way she only dreamed of, and their hot chemistry is fueled by a growing friendship. But Emma’s deception of her sister – who wants Cole for herself – and the secret Cole’s been keeping for more than a decade threaten to tear apart what’s only just begun. Because sometimes the only thing standing in the way of now is then.

My review:
Here’s how it all starts:  Coffee. While fetching coffee for her lecherous boss, Em takes a tumble spilling the brew all over herself and another customer–her childhood neighbor and school-girl crush, Cole Marlowe. He’s moved back to Chicago much the same as Em has. Cole isn’t looking for anything serious–he’s busy working up the partnership ladder at his law firm, but he can’t deny his attraction to Em’s unassuming nature and luscious figure.

And Em? For her, Cole has been this untouchable dream for sooo long–it’s as if she’s afraid to burst that precious soap bubble memory of her pining days. Plus, she’s just getting her career off the ground and doesn’t need complications like a relationship. Cole, he’d be a major complication, mostly because their mothers have pretty much planned on Cole marrying Em’s beautiful older sister, Layla, who always outshined Em…and Layla has her sights on Cole, as well.

But that’s the thing about love–it doesn’t listen to the bickering of parents. It cares not for the secondary alliances. It drive you to take risks, move obstacles, to Make. It. Work. Once decided, Cole is relentless. He’s fierce and vulnerable and overwhelming, and borderline stalker-y (Think ‘please-lets-tell-everyone’ NOT ‘restraining order’ sense) in his pursuit to woo Em. She holds out, however, afraid that this bombshell relationship will destroy the tenuous friendship she’s built with Layla. See, Layla wasn’t the nicest older sister growing up. She hounded Em and flaunted her popularity and openly taunted Em about her Cole-worship, yet that was THEN, and now they’re pretty tight.

And, while the secret Cole hides isn’t his latent affection for Layla, it’s driving Em away nonetheless.

If you like realistic romances, NOW AND THEN is crammed to bursting with sibling rivalry, passion, family expectations, and responsibility. There are no billionaires. There is no S & M, no flashy cars, no contracts.

However, that’s super cool. Makes me feel like I may run into Em or Cole whilst touring my fair Chicago. They breathe my air. They have fussy mothers and scheming sisters. They have skeletons that don’t involve molestation or neglect, only family business of a personal–not shameful or criminal–nature.

COVET–My Fave Sin? a Review

Hi there! Welcome to a new review in my pre-Halloween SPOOKTACULAR. Today’s feature is an urban fantasy–again from JR Ward, but not of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

Covet (Fallen Angels, #1)In COVET, our return to Caldwell, New York has more celestial implications.

As my buddies in Ghostbusters would say:

See, God’s kinda bored with the centuries-long battle for souls. The deal:  Seven people must choose God or Evil in a winner-take-all. If the majority end up choosing God, humanity and the universe win, we go on, no more evil…

If the other side wins? It’s the end…of everything.

The players: Jim “Zacharias” Heron has come to Caldwell on a mission to reinvent himself. He’s a military operative who’s grown weary of the assassin life. While blending in, he’s befriended by Adrian and Eddie–two Harley riding individuals who sometimes don’t throw shadows in sunlight…

Jim’s path becomes diverted by electrocution–yeah, he dies. Not good form to kill your MC in the first few chapters, but it works here. We get to meet angels and Jim gets his purpose: to save the soul of Vin diPietro–a multimillionaire developer under the control of a powerful demon.

This task is made somewhat easier when Vin sets eyes on Marie-Therese, a prostitute with a cause. She’s been through the wringer following a brutal divorce and kidnapping of her son. Now that she has Robbie back, her one goal is to pay off the costs of his recovery–being a high-priced hooker has been key to that purpose.

Vin is struck by her, but also by the need to protect her. His clairvoyance has revealed Marie-Terese is the target of a dark presence and the cost may be her life. And, she’s freakin’ hot, so Vin has two reasons to keep close tabs on her.

As Jim and Vin both work to save Vin’s soul, Vin’s girlfriend Devina proves to be a dangerous connection; one that might be the end of this game.

In the end, COVET is a fast-paced, Good-v-Evil smackdown that has a fantastic romance arc and plenty of smexy bits. It’s a giant departure from the BDB novel series, and yet, with the same location and some cross-over characters, I felt engaged from the start.

If you’re interested in COVET, you can find it in your local library, on e-Loan from a library, GOODREADS, AMAZON or Barnes & Noble.

Let me know if you’ve read this one–and if you liked it.

And, as always:  keep reading, my friends.

To Be UNMADE–A review (New Adult Horror)

Continuing on with my pre-Halloween SPOOKTACULAR, I’m offering up a horror novella. I’ve reviewed a lot of Urban Fantasy and vampires and even work on reapers and Satan’s son…

But this one is a killer-thriller.

UnmadeNew Adult horror novella UNMADE by Carol Oates is short and unsweet. A savory mix between Ray Bradbury and Stephen King.

Here’s what happens:

On prom night Lincoln Dowling attempts to save a wounded dog–and is struck by a car. His prognosis is bad–traumatic brain injury with days to live–and his mother seeks the help of renown neuroscientist, Dr. Matthew Baker, to save her only child.

Mrs. Dowling and Dr. Baker have a past–as in they were lovers years before–and Dr. Baker agrees to help, knowing that he saves the child of his rival.

Lincoln’s recovery is astounding. Within a year of the accident he’s fit and healthy, but his personality is changed. He’s no longer the fun-loving, gentle young man who’d save a wounded dog. Now, he’s agitated and aggressive at times, plagued by nightmares of a clawed creature tearing his friends to pieces. Soon these nightmares become reality. Kids are dying. The children of any person who ever wronged Dr. Baker way back in high school, in fact.

As Lincoln struggles to find the answers to the murders locked within his dreams, he’s sure the ‘cure’ he’d been given wasn’t worth the price he’s paying.

The resolution leaves the reader satisfied with a delicious Bradbury-esque twist.

UNMADE is a new release and cheap–$.99 at the e-tailers.

If you check it out, don’t forget to tell me if it gives you the creeps, too!

And, as always, keep reading my friends.

Contemporary New Adult Romance

by Brenda Rothert

Available now!

StrippedSummary from Goodreads:  Abby Gillis is used to being called a promiscuous, uneducated whore. It’s all in a day’s work when you’re a stripper. Since her job allows her to support her siblings, 24-year-old Abby takes it all off in stride. She’s never had trouble keeping men at arm’s length – until she meets ER physician Chris Reneau, who is sexy, sweet and interested in more than what’s beneath her clothes. As their relationship unfolds, Abby becomes increasingly aware of the desire building in her for the first time, and of her yearning to be wanted by the one man who truly sees all of her.

Commitment-averse Chris finds himself in uncharted territory. He wants Abby, that’s clear, but he can’t accept not having all of her. As the distance between them erodes, he tries to convince Abby to give up stripping for a chance at something real.

As the two of them get closer, Abby realizes that truly baring it all has nothing to do with her body. Chris makes her feel more exposed than she ever has, and she has to grapple with what’s left when her notions about herself and those around her are stripped away, leaving only the naked truth.

My review:
STRIPPED is a solid story. Abby is a young compassionate woman caring for her brother, two half-sisters and her addict mother by stripping. She’s clean–no drug use, no alcohol abuse, no easy catch–setting her wholly apart from the stripper paradigm. She respects herself and doesn’t let her history of being molested affect her. Much. Well, at least not when her mom calls her a whore. Or, when she pushes Chris–the tasty ER doc–away. Okay, then the molestation-survivorship totally kills her.

Still, Abby’s a college grad. She worked hard to get a good job that would support her family so she could quit stripping for her tuition money. She was nearly there when a colleague showed up for a bachelor party and recognized her. Pink slips suck.

Chris is kind, and attentive, and not going to date a stripper. That’s what he keeps telling himself. But he just can’t stay away. He’s wrapped up in the idea that she’s “Great…But.” So they continue to meet and he develops a sincere affection for her. Then HIS work colleagues learn of her work and show up in her club one night to torment her, making Abby feel horrid and cheap–mission accomplished for the jealous nurse who chases Chris.

Lots of fits and starts for this couple, and much drama surrounding Abby and her molester–the father of her two half-sisters. Also, the skeevy side of stripping gets loose and Abby finds herself under the careful attention of a stalker with a giant fist. Enough drama to keep the story moving and enough smexy bits to remind you this is a romance, baby. Suitable for older readers due to the smexy.

EVERYTHING YOU KNOW–Book Blitz and Giveaway!

Everything You Know
Release Date: 09/27/13
Summary from Goodreads:
A dark forest, a screaming woman and blood. These are the images that haunt seventeen year old Emma from the moment she meets Joe Castlellaw. And so much more awaits.

Emma Mathews never believed she was like everyone else, but neither did she think herself crazy. Meeting Joe Castlellaw, Henry Dearborn High’s newest student, was like waking on a cold rock in a strange place, the world bathed in liquid moonlight. Everything is different now…and fraught. Visions of a dark forest, a screaming woman and blood have begun to haunt Emma’s dreams, and not only at night. But Joe’s lonely beauty makes her float on air, and she would follow him anywhere—out of high school and through the great tree, to a world of poetry and political savagery, of magic and murder, to a life that is entirely theirs and yet unlike anything they have ever known.

The sound came again, the gentle hum Emma heard before the man left. It went on lightly, like background music in a store. Inside the hum, so faintly she wasn’t sure if she heard it, a human-seeming voice occasionally whispered. The rasping, musical sound belonged to neither the white-haired man nor his distant counterpart. Emma listened closely to see if she could hear what the voice said. She couldn’t, but as soon as she forgot about it the voice was clear again, like those books where you can only see the secret picture when you squish your eyes and half-stare at the page.
The airy language sounded like disconnected lines of poetry or spoken songs, or bits of speeches and unconnected conversations: questions and answers that didn’t originally belong to one another. Emma listened without trying, and the words blended together to form a single idea.
