Book Blitz & Giveaway–TO KNOW ME

To Know Me
Summary from Goodreads:
To know me is to die…

Seventeen-year-old Mae is convinced that the consequences of her poor decisions have caused the untimely deaths of her dad, sister Laura, and grandma who all die within a year, no matter how ludicrous her thoughts seem to those she loves. The solution? Run away so no one else she cares for gets hurt (even if she has to keep a GPS tracker on her phone at all times).

Desperate to earn her diploma and salvage something of her life, she transfers schools when people get too close. After switching to Woodson Prep with only two months to go until graduation, Mae keeps her goals in sight. But when she meets Ty, the “perfect boy” with his own secrets and a relentless interest in Mae, she must decide if she can stop running from the past and still protect those she loves.

Excerpt:
“Is this for me?” I ask as Ty stands in the center of the clearing with a yellow rose in one hand.
“No. It’s for that grandma who’ll be passing this area in about ten minutes. I’m just practicing my delivery.” He’s so cute when he’s being sarcastic. I take the rose. In an instant I am shocked back to the day of Laura’s funeral. Everyone in her sixth grade glass brought roses to the cemetery to lay upon her grave, yellow ones, her favorite color.
“Why aren’t you smiling?” Ty asks. “Did I do something wrong?”
“N…no.”
“Your hand is shaking,” he says coming over to my side. “Sit down.” He points to the picnic table. “Mae, if you don’t tell me anything I won’t ever be able to help you. I want to help you. I know what it’s like to need help. There’s a lot you don’t know about me, too. And I’m willing to tell you. It’s weird because I hardly know anything about you, but I feel like we’re a lot alike.”
“We’re nothing alike,” I say. I want to tell him. But if I do? Then what? He won’t understand. No one does.
“Is yellow not a good color for brunettes?” he jokes. I can’t help but smile. He takes the rose, breaks off the stem, and tucks it behind my ear. He leans in to smell the rose and kisses my cheek. Only the crunching of sticks from the older couple on the path stops him from reaching my lips.

Cephalopod Coffeehouse–featuring ROMANCING THE BOOKWORM

Welcome to my stop on the Cephalopod Coffeehouse tour! This month’s review features ROMANCING THE BOOKWORM, a New Adult contemporary romance by Kate Evangelista.

I finished this one a couple of week’s ago, but I’ve held back on the review because I had a feeling it would end up being a fave. So, here goes:

Romancing the BookwormXavier Solomon has it bad for bookish Tamara Winters. They go to college together—not that she’d ever know. She’s always trapped in a novel. Friends with Tamara’s bestie, Ronni, Xavier devises a plan to romance this little bookworm on spring break.

At sunny Maverick Bay Tamara’s out of her comfort zone—the third floor corner of the library where she spends her days and nights reading. But when Ronni begs her to waitress at her brother’s restaurant on the beach, Tam just can’t say no. Besides, she’s got a suitcase full of fiction to keep her busy. That is, until delish Xavier sweeps across her coastline.

In champion romantic hero form, Xavier plans little interludes for Tamara to experience–with him–all in the name of turning her head. Does it work?

Comme ci, comme ca.

As with all plans, there are small and large snafu’s—none-the-least of which is the appearance of Zander, Xavier’s hard-partying step-brother, who is by turns a cad and a competitor. His constant challenges cause Xavier to enter the surfing competition if only to take Zander out. Meanwhile, Tamara gets caught in the undertow between Xav, Zander and Ronni, and Xavier’s big romancing ends up as a near wipe out.

The dual viewpoint (which I adore) gives a clear window to the hopes and fears of these two romantic souls. It’s a fun romp with great repartee. I loved watching Tamara break free of her shell, and Xavier is such a gentle love interest. *swoon*

For a New Adult title, the tone is light and the pace is right. It’s got some spice as well. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes a good romance.

Adult Contemporary Romance

Releasing October 29, 2013

Kate Burke is done making bad decisions. Thirty years old and belatedly determined to grow up, the successful travel writer and one-time party girl returns to work at the remote Ponderosa Pines Ranch to reassess her life.

Although her kitchen/cabin staff is lacking and the workload never relents, Kate’s main challenge is Shane Maddox, the ruggedly handsome and doggedly stubborn ranch foreman. Instantly at odds, they battle over everything from ceiling fans to bothersome bats—studiously ignoring the sparks they generate with each confrontation.

They can’t explain their explosive physical chemistry, but after a few frustrated weeks they can’t deny it either. Their solution? Just once. They’ll get past their inconvenient lust and move on.

Kate’s been trying to think with her head instead of her hormones, but is this just another bad decision in a lifetime of careless choices? Has she really changed at all?

Set in the striking and serene hills of southern Colorado, Julianna Keyes’ debut novel offers a sizzling and satisfying tale of unexpected chemistry and the power of second chances. Her characters will get under your skin and into your heart. Just once may not be enough for you either.

Frisky Freebie–SELLING SCARLETT

Selling Scarlett (Love Inc., #1)When your bestest best friend’s life is on the line, what’s the value in a hymen?

SELLING SCARLETT, New Adult contemporary romance by Ella James, endeavors to find out!

Elizabeth DeVille has two best friends, absentee parents, and a crush on her neighbor, the somewhat older, millionaire, poker-player, Bourbon heir Hunter West. And, one of her best friends–Cross–is in a coma following a motorcycle accident. His parents, his dad’s the Governor of California no less, plan to withdraw Cross from the swanky clinic where recovery seems imminent and transfer him to a less-than-desireable county clinic. This, because the good people of Cali wouldn’t want to pony up for the medical bill…

Hunter, playboy-with-a-secret, has anonymous sex with escorts because, well, it’s too dangerous to get close to people. They might find out he’s not such a great guy. And, he’s got a mommy-complex. But there’s something valiant buried within because he’s inordinately attracted to helping little Libby DeVille. She’s clearly in need of a boost, and rather fetching, in his opinion. Unfortunately he’s under the thumb of a vicious porn star who’s wielding secrets like Laboutin heels and Hunter doesn’t want Libby popping up on her radar.

Thus, we get the entanglement: Elizabeth wants to help her buddy Cross, but she’s broke. Hunter has plenty of cash, but he’s not able to approach Libby with it. Not that he really knows she needs it. Everybody in Napa has a trust fund, right? Wrong. Elizabeth’s dad cut off her support years ago when he shacked up with a new wife and her mom’s in and out of rehab too much to be of use. She only has one semester of grad school to finish and then she’s on her own. Not that she could pay Cross’s medical care on an ethics professor’s salary, mind you.

Elizabeth has a brilliant plan, however:  sell the one thing she has–her virginity. (I guess you really can do anything in Vegas.) If the bidding goes well, she might just ‘earn’ enough to cover the medical bills and her tuition. Oh, and the experience could mesh with her master’s thesis on sexual autonomy.

While in Vegas, Elizabeth gets a crash-course in seduction from the inmates of the high-class brothel brokering her hymen-auction–which happens to be frequented by one deliciously messed-up, Hunter West.

You’d think this tale ends with Hunter buying LIbby’s cherry–and perhaps it does–but, in the meantime, we get kidnappings, blackmail, new friendships, BDSM sex acts, and human trafficking, alongside the heartbreaking recovery of Cross. So, SELLING SCARLETT is not a one-trick, erm, pony.

This one could have gone totally seedy. At times it borders on melodrama, but the characters are strong and the anguish feels real. There’s a sequel, TAMING CROSS, out now–but SELLING SCARLETT is a freebie–for the moment. It’s worth nabbing.

Couple caveats:  It seems as though the distance between Napa and LA can be traversed by car in an hour. Not even a hovercar could mange this feat, so it jarred me. And, I’m not really sure the Gov of Cali needs high priced escorts. I mean, there’s all this housestaff just hanging around. No doubt one could dally with a maid.

Amiright, Governor Schwarzenegger?

Here’s the linky-links if you want to download SELLING SCARLETT.

YA Contemporary romance/adventure

Summary from Goodreads:

Since the age of ten, Mia has lived under the iron fist of the fundamentalist preacher who lured her mother away to join his fanatical family of followers. In Edenton, a supposed “Garden of Eden” deep in the South American jungle, everyone follows the Reverend’s strict but arbitrary rules—even the mandate of whom they can marry. Now sixteen, Mia dreams of slipping away from the armed guards who keep the faithful in, and the curious out. When the rebellious and sexy Gabriel, a new boy, arrives with his family, Mia sees a chance to escape.

But the scandalous secrets the two discover beyond the compound’s façade are more shocking than anything they ever imagined. While Gabriel has his own terrible secrets, he and Mia bond together, more than friends and freedom fighters. But is there time to think of each other as they race to stop the Reverend’s paranoid plan to free his flock from the corrupt world? Can two teenagers crush a criminal mastermind? And who will die in the fight to save the ones they love from a madman who’s only concerned about his own secrets?

My review:

Wow. Just, wow.

This YA romance/Adventure kicked me in the gut.

Sixteen y/o Mia hates the religious compound where her mother brought her six years ago. She wants to leave desperately and clings to her one hope–that she can somehow escape. Seventeen y/o Gabriel arrives with his parents–bearing the emotional scars of a chilling childhood incident. He’s angry and resourceful, and just as desperate as Mia to escape.

After becoming an unwitting accomplice in the deaths of 11 commune members, Mia is shaken. But she soon has a new drama: attending her first prayer circle. These mysterious experiences leave many members changed, and not for the better. When Gabe is brought along, Mia is sure something strange is happening behind the scenes, but she could never imagine the hellscape she’s a part of.

A fire. A jungle escape and an impossible choice keep this story hopping. Will Mia return to Edenton to save her friends and family from Reverend Eden’s torture?

[Spoiler: hey, she’s a heroine, right?]

The climax is brutal, and makes the reader sit up and wonder about the power of religion in human experience. For some of you the word ‘Jonestown’ may conjure the mass killing of a religious cult.

In ESCAPE FROM EDEN, we learn that the Jonestown True Believers really had it easy.

Goodness!

You want ESCAPE FROM EDEN? Get it here….or there…

TragicallyFlawedblitz copy

Tragically Flawed by A.M. Hargrove

Available Today!

TragicallyFlawedBook Summary:

Riviera Benson has a talent…one she discovered by accident. She’s a painter, but canvas isn’t her medium. She creates her lovely masterpieces on walls and ceilings of million dollar homes as murals and faux finishes. Her art is in high demand now, but life wasn’t always that way. Riviera has secrets from her past she intends to keep tightly locked away…terrifying secrets that keep her awake at night…that prevent her from getting close to anyone…anyone that is, until she meets Shan.

Benjamin Shandon, owner of Shandon Homes, works like a thousand demons are chasing him…because perhaps they are. His business has boomed, ever since the forest fire swept through the canyon and destroyed hundreds of million dollar homes. He demands excellence in everything…from his employees to his women. He slows down for nothing, keeping a schedule that no sane person would want. But Riviera interrupts everything, twisting his guts inside out, and wedging her way into his heart, destroying a promise he made to himself.

Will they let their pasts control their future, or will they decide to let go and allow their hearts to discover each other’s?

My Review:

This one was a heart-wrencher. Riviera, survivor of terrible abuse, escapes to find a new anonymous life. On her very first day of her first painting job she gets accosted by Shan–and the fire is lit.

It takes months for them to become comfortable with each other, but the chemistry can’t be denied. Riviera’s boss, Marsha Sue, isn’t happy–she always wanted Shan for herself. And Shan? In Riviera he’s finally found peace, and maybe a bit of forgiveness, for the tragedy that claimed his best friend’s life years before. He’s not willing to let her go–even if it puts his life on the line…which of course it does.

Good thing Shan knows how to call in his favors just in time!

On thing is for certain, this book deals with demons–no, not paranormal demons!–those joy-stealing fears and regrets we all hide deep within. Riviera must accept that her years of sexual and physical abuse do not define her character, while Shan must come to terms with the tragedy he didn’t cause, yet blames on himself. Their personal tragedies soften them for each other in just the right way. It’s a reminder that redemption is available, if a person is strong enough to seek (and accept!) it–and that happy endings exist for any of us.

I liked it. And the steamy scenes were gravy. (This title not suitable for the young-ins, folks.)

Interested? You can purchase TRAGICALLY FLAWED for your very own Kindle or Nook! Yea!

About this Author:

anneOne day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life.  So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase.  Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head.  Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what laptop out the window.  She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss and quit her job.  Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again).

So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer. Her books include: Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge and Kissing Fire (The Edge Series); The Guardians of Vesturon series (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, reEmergent and Beginnings); Dark Waltz and Tragically Flawed.

Other than being in love with writing about being in love, she loves chocolate, ice cream and coffee and is positive they should be added as part of the USDA food groups. Catch up with A.M. Hargrove in the usual places:

Excerpt:
He had a large mix of alternative and rap music, and mostly male singers, so when I hit a country CD with a blonde on the cover I held it up.
“Taylor Swift?” I asked.
“What?” A red flush crept into his cheeks. “I had a crush on her.”
I looked at the cover. Maybe that was his secret. Maybe he was into blondes. What if I was an experiment to see if they really did have more fun? My dark chestnut hair was about as far from Goldilocks as it could get.
He reached for the CD, but I raised my arm over my head before he could grab it.
“I was young,” he said, lunging forward and missing my hand.
“And you’re so old and wise now,” I teased, moving the CD behind my back.
He grabbed for it, his body practically on top of mine as he tried to catch my hand. I leaned back, laughing.
“Maybe we should play it,” I said, squirming to keep him from being able to reach it.
He wrapped an arm around my back, pulling me closer. “Let’s not.”
We were a jumbled mass of arms and legs. His belt buckle rubbed the bare skin of my stomach, and his neck was in perfect kissing distance. My gaze traveled to his lips. His close proximity had me forgetting I was winning the game of keep-away…

Excerpt:
“Does it hurt?” My fingertips lingered on the smooth, pearly white scar on Isaac’s chin.
We sat on the couch in his family room, me straddling his lap. He brushed a stray strand of hair out of my eyes with his thumb.
“No.”
“It’s cold,” I said, amazed that the skin there never warmed to match the rest of him.
“You really want to talk about my scars? I have one on my side too.” He lifted his shirt, revealing a salmon-colored blemish along his lower ribcage. “I got this one jumping a fence when I was nine. Didn’t quite make it.” He pulled the waist of his jeans down next, just low enough for me to see the rope-like muscles that ran alongside his hip bone. “And I got this one when I was eleven. Tried jumping my bike over one of those workhorses. Back tire caught on the orange light. Bike stopped; I didn’t. Flew right over the handlebars. I have another one on my thigh.” His fingers went to the button on his jeans.
“I’ll take your word for it,” I said, my hand catching his.
My cheeks grew warm, and his gaze moved to my lips.

A Paranormal YA Romance by
Kate Evangelista
Available NOW! at:
Goodreads, Amazon Print, or Barnes and Noble:

Book Description:
When Death is stabbed with a dagger that sucks out his powers, Balthazar is roped into helping him find the Redeemer, the only one who can remove the dagger. But nothing is free in the Underverse. For travelling to the most dangerous places in the Underverse, Balthazar asks Death for control of the Crossroads.
Arianne was ready to pay Death’s price to save Niko. She was ready to be blind with no memory of the boy she loves. Instead, she wakes up in a strange room, still able to see and with Niko in a deep sleep. She agrees to work with Balthazar on the condition: Death needs to wake Niko. But Arianne soon finds out that helping the bad guy means having to do lots of bad things.

Excerpt:

“Did I really try to kiss you?”

He almost missed a step at the sudden change of topic. “We’re back to that?”

“I thought I was with Niko,” she said.

“I take it the experience wasn’t pleasant? Nikolas can do that to people.”

“It sounds like you hate him for some reason. Why?”

If it weren’t for the real curiosity in her eyes, Balthazar wouldn’t have answered her question. “We do things we’re not proud of. Nikolas more than most.”

“You know him.”

A statement with more truth in it than anything he could say. Everyone knew Nickolas. A little too well for more than most. There lay the problem. Arianne knew Nikolas as the teenage high school boy. Balthazar knew Nikolas as the take no prisoners Reaper who occasionally did D’s dirty work. Nikolas could have easily been third in the rankings, maybe even D’s right hand, but he maintained his Reaper of Georgia status to keep under the radar for the side missions he would be given. It baffled Balthazar that Arianne didn’t seem to know this about Nikolas.

“You’re in love with him,” he responded.

“Since I started high school.”

Nikolas? Entertaining love? From a human, no less. “And how’s that going for you?”

After realizing she wasn’t going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master’s courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she has four completed Young Adult novels.
