Sleepless night? TELL ME About it!

imageDamn you, Olivia Cunning!
I’m a working mother. I gotta be at work by 7am every morning come hell or crying children.
And, yet, I gave away my sleep for Gabe and Melanie. Again.
I am such a sucker.
But, I got a smile on my face.
In fact, I’m feeling bulletproof right now–and that’s not tequila talking. That’s the delicious afterglow of a great read, my friends.
Here’s what happened: the email came in that my pre-order of TELL ME had arrived at 2:37 am. I sparked up my iPad and boy howdy, I had me a piece of fantastic fiction to keep me solidly awake until my alarm, had I bothered to set one, would have blared.
Oh, wait…that’s what happened to me.
Here’s what happened in the story: Gabe and Melanie met way back when in TRY ME, which I reviewed in a week-long Sole Regret lovefest. In their world, it’s five days later and Gabe can’t wait another night to have Mel in his bed. Or the shower. Or wherever he doesn’t have to just phone-sex-her-up. He convinces her to join him a night early so they can have three nights together. Mel’s on board—the plane—when her bestie Nikki shows up even though she’s been completely disinvited from this rendezvous. Melanie’s pissed, but she can’t tell Nikki no—not while she’s in the plane, anyhow.
Still, the heat sizzles between Gabe and Mel. So much so that they practically meld with each other. They leave Nikki to enjoy Gabe’s empty suite in New Orleans while they visit his ranch in Austin for the weekend. Mel loves everything about her kinky drummer—his passion, his house, his dogs—even his parents who pop in unexpectedly.
Just when things really start to get emotional, Nikki calls for yet another rescue. And Gabe’s left in the cold. Quite literally. I nearly tossed my iPad (but I forged on!) and WOW. I’m over the moon—at daybreak, Ms. Cunning.
Some favors, if I may?
Write faster?
Or, maybe, get Amazon to release your preorders at a more human hour?
I’m desperate for TEASE ME, so if you could release it…soon?
Pretty please, with Owen on top?
Thanks. You’re a peach, dear.
You want a sleepless night, too?  TELL ME is live on AMAZON and B&N… Probably other places, but I’m too tired to track them down just now…

A time-travel YA novel
by Nancy Pennick
Available now!

Summary from Goodreads:
Read a book.
Fall asleep.
Meet a boy.
Is it real or just a dream?
Katie’s everyday life suddenly turns exciting when she travels back in time and meets the boy of her dreams. Thinking of nothing else, willing to leave the real world behind, she’s determined to find out if it’s all a dream or not. Returning again and again, Katie almost has her answers until one day her precious book goes missing.

My review:

Katie’s bored with her boring summer. All her friends are gone and she’s stuck at boring home with her mom every boring day. Until…

She gets a book.

A magic book that time-travels her from Oberlin, Ohio, Today to El Tovar, a lodge on the southern rim of the Grand Canyon in 1927. There Kate meets many fantastic new friends…and Drew, a boy she can’t forget.

Each night when Katie reads the book and visits her new exciting world, she falls more in love with that life. With confidantes on both side of the timescape, Kate tries to exist in both places. Of course, problems in today’s world creep in. Tyson, her long-time friend wants to become her boyfriend, but Katie can’t forget Drew. Her father thwarts Katie’s attempts to reconnect with her past-time friends and love leading to a couple blow-ups and Katie being deceitful in order to sneak back in time.

When Katie learns of Drew’s mysterious disappearance, she enlists the help of an unlikely partner to save Drew from certain death.

So. Did I like the story? It’s a bit rough grammar-wise and had some logic issues, but I like the premise. Having devoured the works of Gabaldon and Moning, I’m well-schooled in time-travel romance. This is a YA dealie, so no hot-n-heavy scenes. Most of the time I felt Katie was a bit immature. Dialogue sometimes didn’t connect for me. It was a fun exercise in fantasy, nonetheless. If the stalker hadn’t been present, I’d recommend it for upper MG readers.

Totally smitten WITH GOOD BEHAVIOR–Review

With Good Behavior (Conduct #1)I’m wrapping up my summer reads–because, well, I’ve gotta get to my FALL reads and my pre-Christmas reads. So…

I finished WITH GOOD BEHAVIOR a couple weeks ago and haven’t had a chance to share how much I enjoyed it.

First off, Chicago. It’s my home. I will not carve your heart out with a rusty spoon if you say you don’t loooove it…but I will seriously question your judgment and count my silver when you depart my abode.

But, see, Chicago is not simply a setting for a book. It’s an experience. It’s stuffed pizza and tomatoes on hotdogs and art that looks like chrome spaceships and black dragon-lions and rattling El trains and sultry ozone action days that stink of exhaust and hot pavement.

And, that’s what Jen Lane gives us:  The grit and grime of a city shrouded in corruption, with a hearty helping of Oh yeah–ROMANCE!!

Sophie Taylor and Grant Madsen are new parolees. They share a parole officer, and a deeper connection neither one knows about.

Sophie Taylor, a clinical psychologist, served a year in prison when police discover cash and guns hidden in her office. They were her lover’s. And he was a gangster. Oh, and a patient. Bam! Behind bars…

Grant Madsen, a naval officer, got collared trying to steal the money his brother lost in an illegal poker game. He’d been blackmailed into it–by his brother. And he never said a word.

Now these two ex-cons keep running into each other. Their mutual love of the White Sox (bonus points from this Southside reviewer!) and a mutual attraction turns into a very sweet relationship. Of course, they face the same struggles of any parolee. Sophie can’t get a job, risking re-incarceration. Grant can’t escape his family’s criminal influence. But, together, Sophie and Grant find solace and strength.

Both working for an architectural cruise line, they take on far more responsibility than they expect when their boss has a heart attack. Oh, how I love Grant’s Tequila-moment. Jose Cuervo is not friend of his! And yet, without that inebriated nudge Grant would never cut loose his inner Frank Sinatra.

This bittersweet tale is more sweet than bitter–and the climax continues through four chapters. Tensions ride super high when Grant learns his brother’s role in Sophie’s arrest. Man! That dude is toxic.

The narrative adopts many viewpoints, but it’s not distracting. I love when Jerry, the parole officer, narrates. His jaded view is so deadpan, but warms to his star-crossed lover parolees.

The good news–sequels! SQUEE!

Looking forward to BAD BEHAVIOR…and ON BEST BEHAVIOR is set to drop later this month!

WITH GOOD BEHAVIOR is such a steal at $.99, I’m hoping I don’t get pinched at checkout.

If you’ve read it tell me I’ll love it in the comments!

The V Card. Virgin. Most of us want to punch that sucker ASAP, and hide the fact until then, but not Cassie Hale. Three years ago she frickin’ covered hers in glitter and laminated the thing, proudly telling me that she’s waiting for the perfect guy.
So when I see her half-naked, tangled together, rolling around on the floor with another stripper, I’m kind of shocked. Okay, that’s an understatement. I’m enthralled. I have to know what cracked her picture perfect world and landed her here, and I hope it’s something horrible-an event that broke her the way she broke me. Because, that’s who Cassie Hale is–the woman who stole my heart and crushed it in her hand.

Summary from Goodreads:

Jason Kincaid is young, hot and successful.

An All-Star outfielder for the Seattle Mariners, he finally had everything he ever wanted, including a second chance with his high school sweetheart, Megan Williams.

But their hopes for a ‘happily-ever-after’ are dashed by tragedy.

A horrific car accident wipes out most of Jason’s memories. Unable to recall anything from the last fifteen years of his life, Jason is suddenly adrift, his once charmed life now in ruins.

Megan finds herself in the untenable position of having to deal with the fact that the man she’s helping to rebuild his life may look, and even act, like her beloved fiancé, but in reality, isn’t any longer.

Trying to protect herself, as well as Jason, Megan fights the attraction between them. . .to no avail. As their potent connection inevitably draws them closer, Megan wonders,

With the memories of their relationship gone, can love endure?

WHAT ENDURES can be picked up…right now, in fact….right here:

MY Review:

So, I’ll start with this one thing: I liked this story. Liked it enough to recommend it to my sister. But it took me a bit to get settled in. See, I’ve got a medical background. Been teaching or working in hospitals and med schools my entire adult life…so, when there’s a medical issue in a book I’m challenged to NOT look for all that is wrong with the author’s treatment of the illness. Mostly because I can’t stand when popular culture gets basic medicine wrong in order to tell a convenient story.

I’m not going to say that anything was ‘wrong’ here–I’m no expert on amnesia–but I was surprised that Megan moved out of her home to allow Jason to recuperate alone. She had been by his side for years. They had been through worse personal tragedy, and I really felt it an odd scenario that any medical provider would advocate a loved one to completely remove herself from a patient in need. But, then again, there is lots of goofy pseudomedical advice out there in the real world, and Jason had plenty of money to spend on professional care, unlike most people.

You may wonder why, with such reservations about plausibility, did I like the story?

Because, the tugged heartstrings!

Jason’s struggle to regain his lost memory is engrossing. And Megan’s effort to care for him without obligating him–well that’s admirable, too. With their history lost she doesn’t want to push him into a relationship he can’t understand. So, in essence, they must begin again.

While Jason and Megan’s new love story has some words on the page, they must write new passages, new scenes to bind them together. It is only when they both decide the past doesn’t matter that their future is possible. And, thankfully, it seems to be better than before.

A strong story is to be admired. And that’s what endures.

Fabulous Fall Soup

My Hot Nights series is set in the kitchen because I’ve spent a lot of time in kitchens over the last twenty years, first cooking professionally and then in culinary school, where I met my husband. After graduating, I spent a decade working as a pastry chef before I began teaching pastry arts classes at a local community college and writing romance novels about chefs…while sitting at my kitchen table. Full disclosure: sometimes I write at my desk in my bedroom, but during the summer it’s a lot easier to oversee the chaos of my three kids from the kitchen table—or at least pretend to see!

Speaking of kids, we all went back to school on the same day this year, and while I was school shopping, I fantasized about fall soups. School supply shopping can get rough, and I needed a happy place. My mouth watered as I pondered my favorite fall soup, a rich chicken broth with sausage, fennel, Swiss chard, white beans, and tortellini, kicked up with just enough red pepper flakes to make things interesting. This soup literally brought me back to life after my first child was born, and it figuratively brought the heroine of LUSCIOUS, my second book, back to life. It’s filling, friendly, and easy to throw together on a school night, especially if you have some leftover cooked sausage on hand. And don’t forget the crusty bread!

Tortellini and Sausage Soup with Beans and Greens*

Serves 6

HungryForLove Usen Soup
2 Tbsp olive oil
12 ounces cooked sausage
2 medium onions, small diced
5 carrots, small diced
1 four-inch fennel bulb, thinly sliced then chopped
4 cloves of garlic, minced
½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
10 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
4 cups chopped fresh kale, escarole, Swiss chard or other green
1 15 ounce can white beans, drained and rinsed
1 9 ounce package frozen cheese tortellini
Parmesan or Asiago cheese for garnish

  1. Heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrot, and fennel. Cook until limp.
  2. Add garlic. Saute one minute, until it smells heavenly.
  3. Add broth and red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer. Cook until vegetables are tender.
  4. Meanwhile, cook tortellini separately, so they don’t suck all the broth out of your soup.
  5. When pasta is drained and the vegetables are tender, stir in white beans, sausage, and greens. Simmer until greens wilt.
  6. Put 6-8 tortellini in each soup bowl then add soup. Serve with grated cheese.

* If you want to make this soup a day ahead, do not add the tortellini until you plan to serve it.

Excerpt from INTO THE FIRE by Amanda Usen

“Have you lost weight?” He tensed, wondering if that were a safe question to ask a woman holding a sharp object, no matter how small.

She snorted. “Only twenty pounds.”

“Why? You weren’t overweight.”

“Hunger will do that to a girl. It also helps that I never make that truffled mac and cheese I couldn’t resist back in school.” Her eyes were blue and sharp as she raked him from head to toe. “You don’t look like you’ve spent much time being hungry, but I imagine the prince of the Calabrese restaurant empire doesn’t suffer from plebeian problems like where his next meal is coming from. You have more important things to worry about—like where to buy the biggest, fattest goose livers.”

He had more to worry about than that, but he wasn’t looking for her sympathy. He picked up another hors d’oeuvre and stuffed it into his mouth. “Yup, got no problem keeping my weight up.”

She snorted again and bent to cut even strips from a roasted red pepper. She set the knife aside and coiled a strip on top of each shortbread. After the red pepper came a lump of creamy goat cheese. He could imagine how good they would taste now. Woodsy rosemary. Earthy mushrooms and olives. Sharp pepper and tangy goat cheese. He reached for one more, but she batted his hand away from the tray.

All the way through culinary school, they’d battled for top ranking, his speed and technical brilliance competing with her ability to take a classic flavor profile and turn it into something new and exciting. He looked at the tray of exquisite hors d’oeuvres, and tension shot up the back of his neck. If he had her gift for flavors, he wouldn’t be working twelve-hour days and his new menu would be ready to roll.

He took a deep breath and slowly released it, dispelling the headache before it could get its claws into him. He imagined her offering the tray of hors d’oeuvres to him with a seductive smile instead of smacking his hand. He replaced her French maid’s uniform with something even sexier—a silky, black negligee that displayed her magnificent breasts and made her red-gold hair glow. He added a glass of champagne to her imaginary tray. Then he added another one.

“Take a picture, it will last longer.” Her voice shattered the inviting image in his head. He blinked and found her glaring at him. “Have you seen enough yet? Or have you run so low on inspiration you want to see the rest of my hors d’oeuvre menu? Here,” she thrust a paper into his hand, “let me spare you the time and trouble. You can have my notes, with all the components neatly labeled. I’ll come up with some new ones.”

He feigned nonchalance as he glanced at the list, but every item made him hungry. “If it were that easy for you, you would have beaten me.”

The cold fury in her blue eyes warned him to step back from the table. Instead, he leaned closer. There was one more thing he wanted to know. Maybe it would help him put this whole thing behind him. She was too good a chef to go down in flames without a damn good reason. “Why did you choke during the competition?”

The anger in her eyes went from ice to blue fire. “That’s low, even for you, Calabrese,” she hissed. “I don’t know why you came back here, but you aren’t going to get an apology from me, and I’ll be damned if I’ll offer congratulations. How about this? You’re welcome. Now get the hell out of my kitchen.”

“Make me.” He snagged an hors d’oeuvre from the center of her tray and popped it in his mouth. It was every bit as good as he had imagined. His alluring mental picture of Lila returned, but this time, she was in his bed. “Come on—I dare you to throw me out of your kitchen. I bet we’ll both enjoy it.”

He didn’t think she’d actually do it, and her rough shove caught him by surprise. He stumbled as she bulldozed him across the room, fortunately catching his balance before they reached the door. He swerved to the right, spinning so that his back hit the wall instead. Expecting to push him out into the hall, she kept going and slammed into him. He wrapped his arms around her waist. “Now this is what I’m talking about.”

He expected her to protest, to yell, or maybe even slap him, but instead she gasped and froze. Her eyes were shut and when she opened them, he saw the same stark desire that had consumed him for months. He couldn’t have stopped, even if he’d wanted to. He bent his head and kissed her.

A Dash of Spice: Are YOU Hungry For Love?

I love food. Growing up in New Orleans, events focused around meals were as big a part of my childhood as cartoons and chocolate. From seafood boils and barbeques, to red beans Mondays and fish-fry Fridays, my family and friends gathered together often with one objective in mind: to celebrate life via yumminess.

When I sat down to write Taste the Heat, I went in wanting to share this unique culture with the world. Over the years, Hollywood has certainly provided comedic fodder about my hometown, but rarely do they capture the strong family bonds and the deep-rooted love for community that makes up our lives. History is made and life is shared around our meals, and what better way for me to show that—and take it up a notch—than feature a trio of siblings who own a Cajun Restaurant.

Our feisty middle child, Cajun chef Colby Robicheaux, kicks off this culinary series of love and games, but she’s far from the lone cook in this book. Jason Landry, aka our hottie fire captain hero, knows his way around the kitchen, too. And when these two collide on page, you best believe there’s sparks. Because you see, food is more than just nourishment for our bellies. Or even a reason to gather with loved ones. Food is a universal language. Eating, and preparing a meal for someone special, is a sensual experience. And I have a lot of fun—some may say too much fun—exploring that in Taste the Heat.

So this is my official warning: you will be hungry reading this book. Heck, you’ll be hungry reading the entire series (Seven Day Fiancé featuring rugged big brother Cane releases October 14th). And to warn you properly, I thought it only fair to share one of my favorite excerpts… Bon appetit!

Delicious Excerpt:

Colby inhaled deeply, trying to get a hint of what Jason cooked. Not picking anything up, she asked, “What’s for dinner?”

A muscle clenching and unclenching in his jaw was her only clue—and not much of one—before he said, “That’s a surprise.”

Curious, she let him pull her farther inside. But instead of heading toward the dining room as she’d expected, or even toward the more intimate kitchen table, he led her into the living room. He gently backed her against the leather sofa. “Take a seat.”

Okay. No need for concern here, she told herself, sinking into the soft cushions. Just because she absolutely hated surprises, didn’t trust them, and hadn’t had a good one since her life fell apart twelve years ago, she didn’t need to go mental. This was a date, and dates were supposed to be fun. Spontaneous. She could go with the flow.

Besides, it was possible he wanted to talk before they ate. Or watch a movie, breaking out the TV trays like they did when they were kids. She could handle that. It wasn’t romantic, but she didn’t need romance. She and Jason were just two old friends hanging out, throwing in some much needed benefits, and getting their freak on.

Do people still even say that?

Colby shook her head, her inner-monologue only confirming how long it had been for her. And how badly she needed this. She put on her sexiest smile and glanced up at him, feeling it freeze on her face when she glimpsed the object in his hands.

A black silk blindfold.

Now that was the type of surprise she could get behind.

“And the night takes a turn for the intriguing.” She bit her lower lip as Jason started rubbing the soft material between his long, work-roughened fingers. She cleared her throat and asked, “But shouldn’t we eat first? You know, shore up our strength?”

Jason chuckled. “This is for eating.” At her nose crinkle of confusion, he sank to his knees in front of her. “I’m going to feed you blindfolded.”

Oh my.

She didn’t know what she had expected from tonight, but this certainly wasn’t it. Not that she was complaining. She knew very well how sensual food could be. And how turning off one sense heightened all the others. Colby swallowed hard as Jason leaned forward, gently stretching the elastic band of the blindfold.

“Do you mind?” His voice was a husky whisper at her ear. All she could manage was a small shake of her head. Already her pulse was taking flight and heat was pooling in her belly.

What will it be like later? Was it possible to self-combust from anticipation alone?

He chuckled lightly under his breath, most likely hearing the pant of her breath. She’d be embarrassed if she weren’t so damn excited. As he secured the band around her head, the spicy scent of his aftershave flooded her senses, making everything electric. Goose bumps skittered down her spine as his palm smoothed the back of her hair. Just before tugging the silky material over her eyes, Jason looked into them and said, “Bon appétit, Chef.”

A pop of a joint and the rustle of fabric told Colby that he was moving. The pad of his footsteps on the carpet grew faint, letting her know he was walking away, probably into the kitchen to get their dinner. She still couldn’t pick up any scents, but then, the thrum of expectation coursing through her body made it hard to concentrate. Soon those same soft footsteps returned, growing louder as Jason neared. “I hope you don’t mind, but I outsourced dinner. This is a three-course tasting.”

She stopped herself from saying that all she wanted to taste at that moment was him. The admission seemed a bit over the top—even if it was the truth. Instead, she said, “Can’t wait to see what you brought me.”

The sounds of preparations stilled and then the warmth of Jason’s hands pressed on her thighs. “Colby, before we start, I just want you to know that I care about you. And all I ask is that you trust me.”

“I do trust you.” Right now, in this moment, she couldn’t think of anyone she trusted more.

He squeezed the sides of her legs and moved away, taking the heat of his skin along with him. A clink of glass meeting glass then, “Open your mouth and suck.”

Colby barked a laugh. The teasing tone of his voice told her he knew exactly how that had sounded. “So that’s how you’re gonna play it, huh?”

His seductive whisper came at her ear. “Gotta keep you on your toes.”

An attempt has been made on the lives of Canadian boyband, Spaceships Around Saturn, during their USA tour, and the guys have to go into hiding ASAP. The only problem? In the midst of the crisis and media frenzy, their dad volunteered to hide the guys…in their house.

Six-year-old Emery is as ecstatic as any self-proclaimed Saturnite would be, but Chloe and her seventeen-year-old sister Aralie watch their summer plans crash and burn like a falling star. The SAS guys aren’t happy with the situation, either. Bad boy Jules picks fights with Aralie about everything from his Twitter followers to his laundry, and heart-throb Benji can’t escape Emery’s fangirlisms for more than three minutes.

But after the super-cute Milo kisses Chloe during a game of hide-and-seek, she finally understands what Emery means when she talks about SAS being “out of this world.” If this is what Saturn feels like, Chloe doesn’t want to come back to Earth.

Mom enters the kitchen and shreds away all of my half-courage.

“Chloe, sweetheart, I need to talk to you,” she says.

There’s not a single social event I can think of that I may need to cancel today. No parties. No festivals. No lunch dates. Maybe Aralie had something planned, and I have to do damage control.

“This is really hard for me to say, but Ms. Sue called me this morning,” she says.

Who in the world is Ms. Sue?

“She said you stopped by their store last night,” Mom continues. “She wasn’t trying to rat you out, but she was very concerned and wanted me to be aware of what was going on.”

Oh God. The cigarettes! I ease over a few steps and look into the dining room. Jules stares back at me, wide-eyed and stupid. Then he looks away and buries his face. Noah hits Jules’s arm, and Jules motions for them to shut up. He’s seriously going to let me take the fall for this! I turn my back to the dining room because I have to keep my composure through this, and seeing Jules Rossi right now is not helping my composure.

“Chloe, I know things have been rough these last few months,” Mom says. It’s the sympathy tone. “But smoking isn’t the answer. If you need to talk to someone, you can always come to me or Dad or even Godfrey. Or we can pay for therapy sessions.”

“Mom, I’m not smoking,” I insist. “And I don’t need therapy. I’m completely fine. Really.”

She tilts her head and studies me like she did on graduation night, while she cried because her baby was all grown up. She has those same worried eyes now that she had when she talked about setting her baby bird out to fly on her own. Please, Mom. Don’t call me a baby bird while 3/5 of SAS is listening.

“Sweetheart,” she says. “I just know you went through a lot with that break up, and seeing Deacon the other day couldn’t have made things any easier, especially when he acted like he did. I know you had big plans this summer, and I wish things could’ve gone as planned.”

“I’m okay, Mom,” I say through my teeth.

“Then why were you buying cigarettes, Chloe? Ms. Sue wouldn’t just make that up,” she says.

Her voice pleads with me, like she’s truly heartbroken and worried. She doesn’t even seem mad about it. I don’t know who this Ms. Sue woman is or where she was hiding at that service station, but damn her all the way across the universe for running her big freaking mouth.

“They were for me.” The voice is directly behind me.

But it’s not Jules.

Hollywood Homecoming (Red Carpet Series, #3)
by Sasha Summers
Available now from Inkspell Publishing

HollywoodHomecoming.v4-frontSummary from Goodreads:
Make-up artist to the stars. The favorite aunt. Dance teacher. Baby sister. Talented musician and song-writer.

Why did that word rank above the rest? Helen loved her family and understood they wanted her to have the real love they’d all found. It’s just that she’d found her someone special and learned to live without him. She’d been too young for the quirky, idealistic doctor-off to save the world-to notice. And, really, if she had it her way, he’d never know how she’d felt. Now, he was one of her best friends, a pen pal, losing him would be too much.
Seeing him at their parents wedding, Helen realizes the horrible truth: she still loves Joseph… which wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t in the situation she was in.

But she was. And her secret will change everything. Will it destroy hope for a Hollywood happy ending too?

My review:

This well-paced contemporary romance is a prime read. I’m a sucker for series fiction and in this third Red Carpet novel we get the best of Josh and Clarie (Hollywood Ever After), as well as Gunner and Jenny (Hollywood Holiday) as their relationships intertwine with the budding romance between Josh’s sister, Helen, and Claire’s brother, Joe.

Helen’s admired Joe from afar for years. Now he’s moved to LA and wants to make Helen the center of his world, yet one medical scare after another forces her to push Joe away. Having his love is all she ever dreamed of, but she’s afraid he’s only sticking beside her out of convenience, or worse…honor.

And, having their family’s blessing is only adding to the pressure.

Helen’s a pure spirit and her love for family is truly all-encompassing. It’s impossible not to root for her, in spite of her predicament. Add in the love triangle–competition for her affection by Jenny’s co-star, Chris, only magnifies the tension.

Honestly, I wanted to be right there, holding Helen’s hand, telling her it was all going to be okay. And I’ll be a liar if I didn’t say I wanted to reach through the pages and hug her at that terrible moment she experienced at the airport, praying Joe would come back.

Summers weaves some delightful romance. Not too nitty-gritty-down-and-dirty, but readers will feel the heart in the scenes.

Her first play was written for her Girl Scout troupe. She’s been writing ever since. She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she’s doing so. Luckily, her four brilliant children and hero-inspiring hubby are super understanding and supportive.

Until Next TimeSquished peas! Justine Dell writes a good book.

How does a grief counselor fall in love with an undertaker?

Absolutely, that’s how.

Piper Downing, sole proprietor of Downing & Sons Mortuary, is done dealing with the living. See, this family business has no family. Her parents died years ago leaving her alone. Her first boyfriend died in high school. After spending the past decade embalming people and arranging funerals, Piper knows that love is just plain selfish.

And Piper doesn’t do selfish.

Macy “Quinn” Oliver is a discharged Air Force pilot who works as a grief counselor for the VA. He’s seen his share of bad times. He vowed to never remarry when first love died one month following their wedding. He’ll love, but only temporarily. Twelve years later, he’s still single.

Piper and Quinn meet at Quinn’s grandmother’s wake and are drawn to each other. Piper senses she should keep Quinn at arm’s length, but can’t resist his gentle charm. Piper’s only interested in flings—no strings—and Quinn, terribly attracted to the elegant, aloof Piper, agrees.

Mother of chocolate! Sizzle. That’s what they do.

In bed, and in person—because when these two forces connect it’s a bit of an emotional tornado. Lots of break-up-with-delayed-make-up debris scattered around the countryside.

And, (GOODY!) there’s a convincing love triangle. The Challenger, Gavin—a mortuary supply salesman—makes no effort to hide his interest in Piper. He’s all set to swoop if Quinn messes up. Which, naturally, Quinn does.

I’m a sucker for a first-hand account of two adorable characters, so I love the dual viewpoint. Quinn is delicious. Such a relentless wooing! Piper eventually caves, realizing Quinn has invaded her heart despite her carefully constructed emotional barriers. Everything would be so easy if only she could accept Gavin’s offers, but well, Piper’s starting to feel a mite…selfish.

Justine Dell promised me a Happily Ever After.

Until Next Time delivers.
