A New Beginning ACCIDENTALLY FAMILY–A Review

Hi there! Today I’m excited to share a review for a new contemporary romance from Sasha Summers. ACCIDENTALLY FAMILY is a standalone romance set in the Pecan Valley series for a woman who thought her broken heart was irreparible.

About the book:
Welcome to Pecan Valley, where the town may be small but the townspeople will always lend a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on. Where good times, good humor, and good people will always lead to happily ever after.

Life for Felicity, and her teen children, is finally back on track. After her divorce, she wasn’t sure if her sweet family would ever be the same. But things are good––right up until her ex’s spirited toddler lands on Felicity’s doorstep. If the universe is going to throw lemons at her, thank God she has her best friend, Graham, to help her make lemonade out of them. How did she never notice how kind and sexy he is?

Graham is still recovering from his wife’s death years ago and trying to help his teen daughter get her life together. Who is he kidding? His daughter hates him. Forget lemons––he’s got the entire lemon tree. So when Felicity suggests they join forces and help each other, he’s all in. And suddenly he can’t stop thinking about her as more than just a friend. Too bad their timing couldn’t be worse…

Because life rarely goes as planned. Luckily there are many different kinds of family to hold you together and lift you up…plus maybe even a little love between friends.

My Review
This is not really a romance, more a family drama with some romantic elements.

Felicity Buchanan is a newly-divorced mother of two who lives in Pecan Valley, Texas. She’d married her high school sweetheart, Matt, and supported him through medical school. And about three years ago Matt started having an affair with a pretty, young drug rep. He left his family to move in with his then-pregnant fiance Amber. Felicity and their kids, Honor and Nick, were blindsided and devastated. Matt has moved to Austin with Amber and is raising young Jack; he’s has mostly neglected his family, friends and colleagues left behind in Pecan Valley. Only Honor has maintained some limited contact with her father. In fact, the book opens with Felicity and Honor being disappointed that Matt didn’t show up for Honor’s high school graduation.

And, that’s when they get the call to turn up to the emergency room. Matt, Amber, and Jack were in a catastrophic car wreck. Amber is DOA, and Jack has a broken femur and is in a coma due to head trauma; Matt’s on death’s doorstep. His former practice partner and best friend, Dr. Graham Murphy was at the ER to manage a delivering patient when Matt was rushed in. Graham spent some time with Matt awaiting the arrival of Felicity and the kids, so he knows the story is grim. Before Matt gets wheeled into surgery he tells Felicity that he isn’t going to make it, and he begs her to raise his love child. Felicity agrees, reluctantly. Her main focus was trying to clam Matt, and her intention is to find some relation of Amber’s to find a permanent guardian. Graham is there to help Felicity when they find out that Matt didn’t survive the surgery.

Nick, furious with his dad’s betrayal and lingering neglect, is a hot ball of rage when he learns his mother has agreed to care for baby Jack. It’s a good thing, almost, that Jack is unconscious for a few days because it gives everyone time to cool down from the high drama. Felicity gets an inside peek at what Matt’s life looked like with his replacement family, and it wasn’t pretty. All signs point to him being quite unhappy–and that’s not as satisfying now that she’s saddled with Jack. Because, as it turns out, Amber was a foster kid with no family, and so Jack’s next of kin, and legal guardian of record according to Matt’s will is…Honor. And there ain’t a hell cold enough for Felicity to allow her eighteen year old daughter to forego her college scholarship to care for her half-brother. So, that’s that. Jack will be coming home to Felicity’s re-vamped sewing room just as soon as he’s released from the hospital.

Add to this unexpected house guest, Felicity’s younger sister Charity is back to help celebrate Honor’s graduation. What no one yet knows is that world-touring travel guide Charity doesn’t have a return flight back to Italy. And, she’s homeless, jobless…and has bigger secrets she’s sure her big sis will help her figure out.

Graham has his own difficulty. His beloved wife Julia died of cancer maybe some years ago. He’s been raising their daughter Diana alone ever since, and Di’s a hot mess. Rebelling, sneaking out at night to drink and get high, she’s just been kicked out of her elite private school. So, she’ll be a sophomore at the public school where Nick will be a junior next year. That doesn’t stop all the old widows in Pecan Valley from trying to set Graham up with the assistant principal of that private school. That’s small-town Texas life, I guess, all the matrons want to make sure folks are properly coupled-up.

In fact, they want to see Felicity happily settled again, now that there’s no chance of reconciliation with Matt. As I said, this is a family drama. The blurb tells us that Felicity and Graham will team up, and their rekindled friendship will lead to more. But, “it’s complicated” is kind of the whole gist of the story. Felicity is a champ of a woman who takes her constant struggles in stride. She maintains the bravest face in the history of humanity and not only takes in Jack, but makes a home for him–one warmer and more loving than the one Jack was born to. Nick is as hot a mess as Diana, and these two team up on their own to create some havoc. Meanwhile, the earnest boy who’s been dogging Honor’s steps since freshman year English lit is not willing to leave for his Marines boot camp without trying everything he can to turn her head.

I really enjoyed this story. It is lush in description and characterization. The hero and heroine are grounded humans with real issues. They have problems with problems. They try their best and get crapped on, and they try even harder. The kids have issues that make sense, and their actions may be destructive but they are also reasonable in context. I didn’t hate anyone in the book, really, except Matt who was rendered somewhat sympathetic, in the end. And the choices that the characters make are all so real. The third-person point-of-view shifts between many narrators, but it’s always clear who’s talking and when. This level of clarity helped even bratty and manipulative Diana seem somewhat justified. There is a lot of comfort to go with all the hurt, especially following the funerals. Poor Felicity is overrun with casseroles, desserts and vittles she has no hope of consuming–so why not share it with Graham and Diana? Diana’s in dire need of some women in her life, and the increased visits with Honor, Felicity and Charity do her a world of good. Even Nick is an unexpected help, with both Diana and Jack. Turns out Nick’s uncanny resemblance to his despised father becomes the one touchstone confused and hurting Jack can find.

There is a bit of romance and a VERY LITTLE bit of sexytimes. That said, we know that Graham and Felicity make a great and happy couple to help parent this cadre of kids in various stages of hurt and healing. I’m sure we will see another Pecan Valley novel, this time featuring Charity and the sexy but grieving sheriff who’s always in the right place at the right time…

Happy Book Birthday to FALLING FOR THE BILLIONAIRE WOLF AND HIS BABY

Hi there! Just wishing a Happy Book Birthday to a new paranormal romance from Sasha Summers. FALLING FOR THE BILLIONAIRE WOLF AND HIS BABY is the first book in the Blood Moon Brotherhood Series and looks to be a interesting read.

About the book:
When Jessa Talbot’s boss offered her a promotion, she agreed—no questions asked. Her family needed the money, but fighting the attraction she feels for her brooding employer is tough. Worse, she instantly bonds with his infant son she’s caring for. But this is a temporary solution and she can’t get attached to either of them

Finnegan Dean is cursed. He’s a nicely dressed monster, the wolf inside always looking for a way out. But there are two things he and his wolf agree on. They must protect baby Oscar and Jessa—his mate. While the wolf hungers to seal their bond, Finn fights the instinct. After all, if he really cares for her, he’d never doom her to the life he lives.

How about a little taste?

“Congratulations, you’re the father.” Hollis sounded like he was announcing time of death, not the birth of a child.

Finn stared blindly out the window, anger and frustration warring with utter disbelief. “You’re sure?” He couldn’t keep the razor-sharp edge from his voice. Hollis was just the messenger—one of the few people Finn could trust, one of the few that stood by him no matter what. He was the asshole who knocked up a long-forgotten one-night stand. How was the question. He was always careful. Extra careful when it came to sex. He had to be. “I met her four months ago, Hollis. Are you sure?” His grip on the phone tightened.

“I’m sure it’s yours. A full-term, healthy baby. I can’t guarantee much more.” Hollis’s voice remained calm, almost detached, as always. “Cara didn’t make it. She has no family, no one to challenge custody of the baby.”

Cara. She’d been so full of life, so hungry for the next big adventure. What they’d shared had been fast and furious. When they’d parted, it had been on good terms, no expectations or regrets. How could she be dead?

Hollis’s words grabbed his attention. “Looking at the body—I’m not sure what happened.”

“So, not a car accident?” Finn had wondered. Guilt and sadness kicked him in the gut.

“That would be the easy explanation. One that will be her official cause of death.”

“But?”

“But I think there’s more to it.” Hollis sighed. “There’s always more to it when we are involved. I’m going to have a look at her records, see what needs to be taken care of. I hate to point this out but…this isn’t going to go over well with the others.”

“No shit,” Finn growled. “It’s not exactly making my day, either.” Hollis hadn’t said it, but Finn knew the truth. Cara’s death was on him. His fucking fault.

“No, I don’t imagine it is.” He paused, the silence loaded until he added, “As unfortunate as that is, he can’t stay here.”

“He?” Finn repeated, his brain already assessing damage control.

“Your son,” Hollis finally snapped. “This is dangerous, Finn.”

Because there was nobody or nothing like his…son. This boy could jeopardize everything they’d been striving for the last ten years. Words wouldn’t come. His son. He might be a baby now, but what the hell would he become? What would he be capable of? Self-loathing, hot and bitter, flooded Finn’s mouth.

“Jesus, Finn, are you listening?” Hollis paused. “He can’t stay in the hospital. I’ve been handling tests, all his bloodwork, but I can’t be here twenty-four seven. You must come get him. He’s your responsibility.”

Hollis was right. And there wasn’t a single thing he could do about it. “Fine.” The word was clipped.

“Today,” Hollis added.

Meaning Finn needed to work faster on finding help. The initial call from Cara’s agent the night before had given him a heads-up, but he’d known the kid wasn’t his. It had been too soon, an impossibility. Now… He ran a hand through his hair, wanting to hit something. “Give me ‘til noon. I’ll be there.” He sat in his tall-backed leather chair, slammed the phone onto the desk, and pressed his fingers to his temples.

What the fuck was he supposed to do? Babies weren’t dogs—you couldn’t put them in a kennel for the day. He wasn’t equipped for this. His assistant, Marjorie, had pulled employee files for him last night—right before she’d quit. And this time, he didn’t think she was coming back.

He’d met with two of the three assistants he deemed acceptable this morning. Neither was suitable. Nor did they act as if they could deal with the sort of surprises that might come with this baby. Contestant number three was his only hope. It’s not like he could just call a nanny service, not yet. He’d have to wait a month. If this baby… He sighed, rolling his head and easing the tension in his neck.

Hollis was right – this was dangerous for them. Too many unknowns, too many variables, to turn over to a stranger.

Love Conquers All ECLIPSING APOLLO–Review and Get Your FREE Book!

Eclipsing Apollo - Review Blog Tour BannerHi there! Today I’m sharing my review for a historical romance that goes waaaayyy back! I really enjoyed author Sasha Summers’ contemporary fiction, (HOLLYWOOD EVER AFTER, HOLLYWOOD HOMECOMING, and HOLLYWOOD HOLIDAYS) so I thought why not? ECLIPSING APOLLO is the lovestory between Apollo, a god of the Olympic pantheon and Coronis, a mortal princess. It is an interesting and bittersweet supernatural tale.

Make sure to check out the excerpt and keep scrolling to get your free book(s)!

Eclipsing ApolloAbout the book:

Apollo is fond of many things. Music, poetry, physical prowess, truth, and love. The Pythian Games are in his honor and he attends, as a mere mortal, to enjoy the competition… and the women. Meeting the fair Coronis offers him his greatest delight. Her strength, her fearlessness, and her beauty clasp his heart with an irrevocable hold. But she wants none of him.

Coronis’ duty is to marry, but she yearns for so much more. She is a fierce competitor, a hunter, skilled in strategy and reason. Those that would court her lack both the mind and the body to rival hers – she will settle for no less. As a mortal, Apollo was both infuriating and tempting. But Apollo the Olympian is terrifying. She fears giving him her heart might destroy her soul.

Demeter’s need for revenge pits Olympian against Olympian, forcing Apollo into a darkness the God of Light must fight if he ever hopes to see his Coronis again.

How about a little taste?

He turned, readying his bow as he’d done a thousand times before. It was all too easy to miscalculate, to skew his arrow a hairsbreadth from the mark. He released the arrow, stunned when it hit the target.

The crowd reacted instantly, applause and cheers breaking the silence.

He looked at Coronis, stunned by the slight smile on her face. “Why do you smile?”

“Father says there’s never been more than four rounds.” Her smile grew. “We shall make history.”

He smiled in response. “Winning is no longer important?”

“Winning is everything,” she argued, incredulous. “Surely you see that?”

In that moment she was not just a woman. No, she was a competitor. An adversary to respect. He nodded, puzzling over the affect this woman had upon him.

Once the field was cleared and the targets were place, a silence fell upon the spectators. He would lead this time. The target was miniscule, an easy miss…

Coronis scarce waited for his arrow to fly before releasing hers.

The crowd waited as the judges ran the length of the field to the targets.

From the corner of his eye he watched her. She stared at the ground, her hands clasping her bow as she shifted from foot to foot.

When the judges pulled her arrow from the target and held it high, the crowd erupted with cheers and applause—to be drowned out by rolling thunder. Rain fell down in torrents, lightning split the sky in quick succession, sending all in the stands in search of shelter. He would have followed the others, but she stood, staring up at the sky, smiling. So he remained at her side.

He would touch her, pull her against him, and hold her. Instead, he stepped closer and took her hand in his. Only then did she look at him.

Lightning pierced the sky, striking a great tree at the edge of the field. He’d scarce heard the crackle and snap of its mighty trunk before the air around them whistled and the tree began to fall. He did not think, but pulled her tightly against him, sheltering her with his body. When the ground shook with the force of the fall, he held her still. Her back was pressed against his chest, her scent tickling his nose, while his arm cradled her waist. His hold eased once he knew she was safe, but the feel of her curves against him was a heady thing. If not for the chill of her wet tunic on his skin, he would have held her until she forced him to release her.

He swallowed, taking in the tree. If he’d not pulled her aside, Coronis would be dead—pinned beneath the tree. His chest felt heavy, weighted by a most crushing pressure. The feel of her, trembling against him, was the greatest comfort. He drew in a deep breath, running his hands along her arms. “You are cold,” he murmured, his nose brushing her ear.

She shivered, pulling from his embrace. She glanced at the tree, the realization of what might have happened clear upon her pale features. She stared up at him with a face so conflicted he would draw her close once more. Instead she ran from him, toward the safety of her father’s house.

My review:

This is the third book in a series, and I’m probably sure I should have read it in order. That said, I still was able to enjoy this book–after I sorted out the backstory.

This is a historical romance of Ancient Greece featuring Olympian god Apollo finding love, unexpectedly, with a mortal princess.

While the pantheon of Olympus squabbles regarding the vengeance Demeter wishes to wreak over a shade who hunts her daughter Persephone, Apollo and Hermes travel to Delphi to compete in the Pythian Games, celebrating Apollo’s ancient victory over a dragon.  En route, Apollo catches sight of a huntress in the wood, Coronis. She is a fantastic physical specimen, and her form while hunting is admirable. He is taken by her physical charms, and thrown off by her acid tongue.

Coronis is off-balance whenever she encounters the beautiful and arrogant (she assumes) Apollo. However, the longer he competes in the games, the more she realizes that his pride is well-deserved. Time and again he stands up for her, and risks much to save her from a forced marriage to Damocles.

Poseidon and Daphne, both angry with Apollo, are set on separating the pair, even after Apollo pledges to marry and remain faithful to Coronis. One reviewer complained that there’s a lot of sex in this book. Ha! The first sexy scene between Apollo and Coronis happens on their wedding night, and there are few scenes after that. It’s not THAT much sex, enough to cement their relationship, which is something that Apollo doubts greatly.

He has never experienced real love, and Coronis possesses such a feisty, hard-won heart that he’s not sure she truly does love him. HE feels that he loves her heart and soul, and wants to make her an immortal, the sooner the better, as he’s had troubling images of her being attacked since they first met. He also sees their son growing strong, so he knows they have a life together, but–and this is probably mythologically accurate–it’s not exactly a happily ever after. I won’t spoil this, but the end is more bitter than sweet. The scheming Olympians have their way, and it leads to heartbreak and bloodshed.

I liked the story. It was interesting and creative. I felt a part of this ancient society, and found it playful and engaging. I’d love to have a god worshiping me, as Apollo did for Coronis. His heart was open, and he reveled in the moments that he felt hers was, as well. There was plenty of plot to move the story along, between Coronis’ unknown lineage, Damocles’ antics, and Apollo’s champion performances. How comical when the man you’ve been sniping at is suddenly revealed to be the god you worship and appeal to for guidance! Poor Coronis, I really did sympathize.

I did have a serious problem in the amount of grammatical errors I found in my review copy. Not sure if I was sent an uncorrected ARC, but there were so many errors (misused homophones, missing words, punctuation, misspellings) that I truly hope so, and I hope all was corrected in the for sale copy.

My review:

This well-paced contemporary romance is a prime read. I’m a sucker for series fiction and in this third Red Carpet novel we get the best of Josh and Clarie (Hollywood Ever After), as well as Gunner and Jenny (Hollywood Holiday) as their relationships intertwine with the budding romance between Josh’s sister, Helen, and Claire’s brother, Joe.

Helen’s admired Joe from afar for years. Now he’s moved to LA and wants to make Helen the center of his world, yet one medical scare after another forces her to push Joe away. Having his love is all she ever dreamed of, but she’s afraid he’s only sticking beside her out of convenience, or worse…honor.

And, having their family’s blessing is only adding to the pressure.

Helen’s a pure spirit and her love for family is truly all-encompassing. It’s impossible not to root for her, in spite of her predicament. Add in the love triangle–competition for her affection by Jenny’s co-star, Chris, only magnifies the tension.

Honestly, I wanted to be right there, holding Helen’s hand, telling her it was all going to be okay. And I’ll be a liar if I didn’t say I wanted to reach through the pages and hug her at that terrible moment she experienced at the airport, praying Joe would come back.

Summers weaves some delightful romance. Not too nitty-gritty-down-and-dirty, but readers will feel the heart in the scenes.

Have a HOLLYWOOD HOLIDAY? Sure!

Hollywood Holiday (Red Carpet, #2)Sasha Summers spins a stellar sequel.

Try saying that three times, fast!

Yes dear ones, HOLLYWOOD HOLIDAY is everything we can expect coming off the HOLLYWOOD EVER AFTER high. In a delightful twist, the second book of the Red Carpet series focuses on two fresh characters—Jenny Fleming, and actress and good friend of Claire and Josh Wiley—and Claire’s younger brother Ben “Gunner” Foster, a combat veteran who lost a limb.

This unlikely pair meets en flight to LA. Jenny, a recovering alcoholic, is terrified of flying and Gunner comforts her through a panic attack…or two. Traveling under an alias to avoid paparazzi, Jenny is unsure if she should reveal herself to Gunner. Plus, she’s not interested in becoming another tabloid scandal. The spark they ignite isn’t wasted when they disembark, however.

They reunite at a community center where Jenny is completing service for a DUI conviction. Gunner is a volunteer helping the disabled athletes program. A few fits and starts as each character aims to self-defend, but soon we realize why Gunner won’t take off his clothes. Jenny is able to assuage his fear—OMG Thank Goodness!!—but he discovers her true identity in Jenny’s characteristically humiliating fashion and freaks out.

Without Gunner’s constancy, Jenny fears she’ll hit the sauce again, so she throws herself into training for her new action movie. And fending off the advances of her co-star, Chris Gibson—who I’ll call McGrabbyhands for the duration as this seems more accurate.

Oh! Guess who pops onto the set as a technical stunt coordinator…Gunner! Yea!

Jen’s determined to rebuild her career, McGrabbyhands is determined to capitalize on Jen’s notoriety, and Gunner’s determined to avoid the drama despite his attraction to Jen. Oh, and Gunner’s mom hates Jen for some drunken smooching months back. Thinks she’s a home wrecker. So, yeah, it’s complicated. Jenny’s heartbroken and takes off to a mountain retreat to rethink her life. Unexpected arrivals bring on the HEA.

In the end, we get a bit of separation and then no separation at all. And, really, I’m relieved I didn’t have to reach inside the book and smack sense into Gunner!

HOLLYWOOD HOLIDAY is a fast-paced contemporary romance with some sizzling scenes sure to please.

It’s available at all the usual spots, and probably your local bookstore as well…

HOLLYWOOD EVER AFTER…yes please!

Hollywood Ever After (Red Carpet, #1)I happened across this lovely title by Sasha Summers, and, wow. It reads like a script…go figure!

This contemporary romance tracks the budding relationship between divorced, mother of two, Claire Foster, and Hollywood leading man, Josh Wiley.

And…ACTION!

Here’s how it goes: Claire visits LA for the premiere of her BFF, Shannon’s, first big movie. Shannon is a studio exec. On the red carpet Claire stumbles and is assisted by the gallant, several-years-younger-than-Claire, Josh. For a change, it’s the blockbuster actor who’s star struck!

Josh seeks out Claire during the afterparty, and woos her successfully. But Claire isn’t looking for more. She’s a mom, after all. And she’s dealing with her ex–a serial batterer who continues to invade her life begging for another chance.

That Josh is smitten, well, that’s pretty hard for solid, dependable Claire to believe. Oh how fun it is to watch Josh dig his heels in! Especially so because Claire’s teenage daughter finds Josh terribly attractive. And, the paparazzi are relentless.

Still, one transcontinental extended family holiday convinces Claire that Josh is in this for the long haul. Marriage, parenthood, the whole ball of chocolate. Unfortunately, Claire’s past kicks back with a vengeance nearly stealing her HEA…

Sometimes I’m tempted to call a book like this a fantasy–only because it’s such a happily ever after–but I’ll tell you I was so rooting for Claire to find love again! Her little family really needs to be whole again and the dynamic between Claire’s mother and Josh’s father makes a nice subplot that sets the stage for future story lines.

Sasha Summers ties up the loose ends here, with the second book drawing on accessory character stories–so no need to fear The Cliffhanger.

You can find HOLLYWOOD EVER AFTER in the usual places:

Why did that word rank above the rest? Helen loved her family and understood they wanted her to have the real love they’d all found. It’s just that she’s found her someone special and learned to live without him. She’d been too young for the quirky, idealistic doctor-off to save the world-to notice. And, really, if she had it her way, he’d never know how she’d felt. Now, he was one of her best friends, a pen pal, losing him would be too much.
Seeing him at their parents wedding, Helen realizes the horrible truth: she still loves Joseph… which wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t in the situation she was in.
But she was. And her secret will change everything. Will it destroy hope for a Hollywood happy ending too?

About the Author
Sasha is part gypsy. Her passions have always been storytelling, history, romance, and travel. She writes both lyrical romantic fantasy AND steamy contemporary romance. Her first play was written for her Girl Scout troupe. She’s been writing ever since. She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she’s doing so. Luckily, her four brilliant children and hero-inspiring hubby are super understanding and supportive.
