Unexpected Afterlife DAMNED WHEN I DIDN’T–Review and Giveaway

Hi there! Today I’s sharing a reviwe and giveaway for a YA paranormal romance from a friend and fellow author, Cherie Colyer. DAMNED WHEN I DIDN’T features a newly-deceased human girl who’s not sure WHY she’s now a succubus, and really would do anything to reunite with her family.

About the book:
Death isn’t the end for eighteen-year-old Avery Williams, and her final resting place isn’t beyond the Golden Gates. No, the Queen of the Damned has plans for her and, unbeknownst to Avery, fought hard to gain possession of her soul.

As Hell’s newest succubus, Avery is expected to siphon life from the living. It only takes a long, meaningful kiss, but for a virgin like Avery, kissing guys she barely knows isn’t something she’s comfortable doing.

Avery focuses on the upside of her fate—she’ll be returning home, or so she thinks. When the Queen of the Damned cuts her off from her old life, Avery is determined to find a way back to her family and friends, even if it means facing Hell’s fury if she’s caught.

My Review:
Eighteen year old Avery Williams is dead. She doesn’t figure it out right away, but it kinda tips her off when Lilith, the Queen of the Damned, sends her off with her incubus chaperone, Cole. And those rivers of burning souls truly open Avery’s eyes to her dangerous new predicament. Go to one high school party and end up in Hell? Even Avery isn’t sure why. Cole isn’t thrilled to have a succubus partner, especially one so clueless and unwilling to do even the basic things necessary to keep her strong and virile in the human realm: like make out with people and mark their souls for Hell. It’s a lot for a virgin to take, though few of the folks Avery encounters can actually tell she’s still a virgin.

Thing is, she’s a bit of a prude, and some well-placed rumors had Avery’s schoolmates believing she was less wholesome than she truly was. And now, as a succubus she’s meant to feed of the life force of strangers…through acts of intimacy she’d barely tried as a living person. In fact, Avery’d like to just give the whole thing up except Cole makes it clear that doing so would result in swift and gruesome punishment from Lilith. More pressing is Avery’s immense need to learn if her sister died in the same accident that ended her own life. If Gracie still lives Avery has some important messages about living a good life and saving a mutual friend from a Hell-damned fate. If only she could contact Gracie! Lilith severed every connection Avery can make to her past life, and it’s up to Cole and a band of misfit paranormals to help Avery breach her own wake to say her final goodbyes–without Lilith finding out. Because she didn’t become Queen of the Damned without frying a few souls. And, Avery’s soul won’t survive Lilith’s wrath.

This was an unexpected treat of a contemporary paranormal romance, with Avery being a conniving and petulant succubus whose attitude problems are redeemed by her aversion to marking souls and stealing even hours off the life of unsuspecting humans. Cole is a stable presence, and their attraction is both unconventional and unprecedented. Cole and his chums can see the good in Avery, to the point they aren’t sure why she’s not in Heaven. Unfortunately, being reborn in Heaven would not necessarily facilitate Avery’s plans–which do include getting some contact with her family. It’s a bit of a caper, actually, how she and Cole enlist his contacts to do the unthinkable–hide her transit from Hell just long enough to get her message across. I liked it lots, and the connection between Avery and Cole has a slow build that suits Avery’s sensibilities surrounding love and how to make it.

This is a YA suitable read, with a fun and dynamic cast of characters I’d love to experience more adventures with. Can an incubus and a succubus find love with one another? Well, Avery sure is willing to find out.

Their Fates Are ENTWINED–Review and Giveaway

Hi there! Today I get to help celebrate the release from a friend and fellow author, Cherie Colyer. ENTWINED is Cherie’s fourth YA novel, and the third in her Embrace series.

EntwinedAbout the book:
Only a few months after embracing her magical powers, defeating a dark witch, and banishing a faerie prince back to his realm, sixteen-year-old Madison Riley is back in book three of the Embrace series—and doing the bidding of a demon. She has no choice but to do so if she wants him to honor the deal they made to save the life of someone she loves. Twenty years of service to a creature of hell is a big price, but one she’s willing to pay. And it sure beats the alternative: selling her soul.

But life gets complicated when you’re the beck-and-call witch of a crossroad demon. Caden, the demon she serves, wants to become master of Death Himself, and with Madison at his side he has the means to do it.

It’s up to Madison and her coven to foil his plans, but Caden’s intentions aren’t entirely evil—and the kisses he seals his deals with aren’t too bad either. As Caden’s motives test Madison’s trust, his shameful flirting tries her boyfriend Isaac’s patience. But being caught between two supernatural hotties is perhaps the least of her concerns when the coven’s interference in Caden’s plot might just cost Madison her life and unleash hell on earth.

My Review:
This is the third book in a series and is best enjoyed by reading the previous books.

Madison has been working on her powers, but no one in her coven was strong enough to save her younger brother from dying, so she sold her powers to Caden, a crossroad demon. Now she’s his “beck-and-call” witch much to her dismay. And her boyfriend Isaac isn’t wild about this arrangement either. Caden calls Madison at all times of day, particularly relishing in disrupting her plans with Isaac…so there’s a LOT of friction.

Caden’s most recent tasks involve Madison helping him to collect the four pieces of a Binding chain which, when united, will allow the wearer to control the actions and powers of any being, even a supernatural one. It’s too much power to trust int he hands of a demon, but Madison must comply with Caden’s demands or risk him no holding up his end of the bargain—essentially causing her brother to die.

Madison does seeks some help coping with her new “job,” mostly confiding in her BFF Kaylee who inadvertently raises the dead. Yep. Zombie. (Well, sorta….) Plus, it seems that Caden’s big brother has some serious designs on the binding chain, or Madison, or both.

I must admit, this book took directions I wasn’t expecting. Madison, Isaac and their coven are determined to thwart Caden’s attempt to unite the binding chain pieces, yet, in the process of working against Caden, Madison learns that Caden’s motives aren’t what she expected. No, he proves time and again that his behavior isn’t that of a typical demon. That doesn’t mean he’s all good. He does take advantage of Madison’s physical vulnerabilities on more than one occasion. Clearly, Caden would love to explore a more physical partnership, but he stops short whenever Madison puts him in check.

For her part, Madison is keeping too many secrets, and all of them will drive a wedge between herself and Isaac–if he ever finds out. There’s a lot of tension, mortal and emotional, with lots of bargaining and some re-drawing of Madison’s agreement with Caden. The resolution is one fast ride to avoid eternal damnation. Without the trust developed between Madison and Caden there would be no happy. And, while this story ends clearly, the door is open to another book in this series. Yay!

Interested? You can find ENTWINED on Goodreads, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. I received a review copy of ht is book from the publisher, OmniFic Publishing, for an honest review.

Book Blitz and Giveaway! CHALLENGING DESTINY by Cherie Colyer

Challenging Destiny

Release Date: 03/27/14
Summary from Goodreads:
Logan Ragsdale and his younger sister, Ariana, have been marked, chosen to be unwilling participants in a war between angels and demons.

Logan can sense something’s not quite right. Like an unexpected chill on a summer’s day, he can feel the unseen closing in. He’s had these feelings before and, each time, someone close to him died. He’s afraid this time it might just be Ariana.

Logan’s fears are soon confirmed when he discovers their new friends aren’t human, but rather representatives from Heaven and Hell sent to Earth to ensure he and Ariana accept their roles in an ancient prophecy. Demons want Logan to open the gates of Hell. Ariana has the power to stop them, but if she chooses to side with Heaven to spare the lives of thousands of innocent people, she’ll damn her brother for eternity.

Together, they must derail the biblical event if they hope to save themselves and the future of mankind…but what price are they willing to pay to keep the other safe?

My Review:
In this contemporary YA paranormal romance Ariana and Logan Ragsdale are orphaned siblings who happen to have mind-control powers. Logan is 18 and Ariana is 16, both born on All Saints Day, two years apart. Their parents died in an house fire 8 years ago, and their aunt and uncle, who had been guardians, were killed in an auto wreck two years ago. After bouncing to a couple foster homes and finding those caregivers being strangely injured, Logan convinces the Illinois State Foster system to let them live alone…

When we begin the story, Logan and Ariana are staying under the radar of the authorities. Ariana has a BFF, Becca, but they mostly keep to themselves–out of fear that any people close to them are targets for the tragedy that seems to follow them.

Of course, they are teens, so it’s impossible not to notice the two new students in their small high school. Ben is in Ariana’s art class, and interested in dating her. Strangely, he is immune to Ariana’s mind-control. Likewise, Logan meets Kira in Foods class. The attraction simmers, and yes, she can resist Logan’s mind powers.

Starting fledgeling relationships is foreign, but exciting. Still, they are wary due to the lack of effect of their powers on their potential beaux. Especially so when Kira begins to reveal more of her history to Logan. She’s been 16–for a real long time…and most of that was spent in agony. Seducing Logan to her purpose will satisfy the requirements of her boss, but could mean the end of civilization.

Not as though these kids didn’t suspect foul play in the deaths of their caregivers, but who’s really ready to accept celestial explanations? Surely not Logan. He thinks Kira’s off her nut, and rightly so. A little physical demonstration promptly makes him a believer, however.

And Ben? He’s on the other side of this equation. He’s anxious to get Ariana to join his team, even if doing so condemns Logan to a fiery fate.

With new knowledge behind the sinister plot that isolated Ariana and Logan from anyone who could help them, they must choose who to trust. According to a prophesy, a war is coming between the Blessed and the Fallen, and the winner will be decided when Ariana, or Logan, chooses a side to assist.

In either case, accepting their destinies means they will lose each other. Or, not. See, Ariana and Logan are determined to beat the Blessed and Fallen at their own games–and set themselves free of this cataclysmic prophesy.

Not that they go about it right. Outsmarting beings that can read your mind is pretty tough, after all. Escape Plan A soon devolves into Survival Plan C.2 when one of their guides changes teams mid-game and the casualties are dear.

It’s a wild chase with pretty steady tension throughout as Ariana and Logan search for the answers that will divert their fate. The end is tied up, but leaves room for a sequel. It’s an innocent read and suitable for lovers of paranormal YA fiction.

Hi there! It’s my great pleasure to welcome the new release of a great writer, fellow critique partner and friend, Cherie Colyer! I’m so excited to share my review of CHALLENGING DESTINY, a YA paranormal romance. This Wild Rose Press release features angels, demons, humans and not one, but TWO love stories! Yay!

How’s About A Little Taste?
That night I awoke to a noise in our apartment. Soundlessly, I got out of bed, grabbed the metal baseball bat I kept near my door—a habit I’d picked up from my uncle—and went to look around. I pushed Ariana’s bedroom door open a crack. Her room was dark. It smelled like the autumn-spice candles she always burned. She was fast asleep, curled up on her side under her thick cream comforter. A search of the family room and kitchen turned up empty. Relieved, I decided that I had to have been dreaming or had heard one of our neighbors out in the hall. I stumbled back to my room, cursing under my breath when I jammed my little toe on the edge of the doorframe.

My head had barely hit the pillow when a raspy, male voice barked, “Trap!

My racing heart drowned out the rest of its words. I knew that voice, and there was never a person attached to it. My mind went numb with fear, and every muscle in my body tensed. I’d thought I was past hearing voices. I wanted to scream and would have, but I didn’t want to wake Ariana.

The disembodied voice spoke again in a hurried whisper: “Must protect.” There was a long pause. “Up to you.”

And then silence. Outside, a distant horn blared and cars swooshed past the apartment complex. I sat in the shadows created by the moonlight and listened.

It didn’t speak again.

What trap? Protect who? Why was it up to me? The words had been garbled so badly, I wasn’t even sure I’d heard them correctly. Hearing voices freaked me out—it always had. And now I had more questions that I didn’t know how to find the answers to.

A moment later, Ariana’s blood-curdling scream had me out of bed and sprinting to her room.

YIKES! that’s pretty intense.

Excerpt:
He had a large mix of alternative and rap music, and mostly male singers, so when I hit a country CD with a blonde on the cover I held it up.
“Taylor Swift?” I asked.
“What?” A red flush crept into his cheeks. “I had a crush on her.”
I looked at the cover. Maybe that was his secret. Maybe he was into blondes. What if I was an experiment to see if they really did have more fun? My dark chestnut hair was about as far from Goldilocks as it could get.
He reached for the CD, but I raised my arm over my head before he could grab it.
“I was young,” he said, lunging forward and missing my hand.
“And you’re so old and wise now,” I teased, moving the CD behind my back.
He grabbed for it, his body practically on top of mine as he tried to catch my hand. I leaned back, laughing.
“Maybe we should play it,” I said, squirming to keep him from being able to reach it.
He wrapped an arm around my back, pulling me closer. “Let’s not.”
We were a jumbled mass of arms and legs. His belt buckle rubbed the bare skin of my stomach, and his neck was in perfect kissing distance. My gaze traveled to his lips. His close proximity had me forgetting I was winning the game of keep-away…

Excerpt:
“Does it hurt?” My fingertips lingered on the smooth, pearly white scar on Isaac’s chin.
We sat on the couch in his family room, me straddling his lap. He brushed a stray strand of hair out of my eyes with his thumb.
“No.”
“It’s cold,” I said, amazed that the skin there never warmed to match the rest of him.
“You really want to talk about my scars? I have one on my side too.” He lifted his shirt, revealing a salmon-colored blemish along his lower ribcage. “I got this one jumping a fence when I was nine. Didn’t quite make it.” He pulled the waist of his jeans down next, just low enough for me to see the rope-like muscles that ran alongside his hip bone. “And I got this one when I was eleven. Tried jumping my bike over one of those workhorses. Back tire caught on the orange light. Bike stopped; I didn’t. Flew right over the handlebars. I have another one on my thigh.” His fingers went to the button on his jeans.
“I’ll take your word for it,” I said, my hand catching his.
My cheeks grew warm, and his gaze moved to my lips.

As a new witch, Madison needs to learn how to control her powers.

Every time she kisses Isaac the magic within her strikes out. Bam! And folks, electro-shocked lips are NOT attractive.

Unfortunately, with schoolwork, household chores, and caring for her younger brother Chase while dad works, Madison’s practice time is next-to-nil. And she’d like to really kiss Isaac—preferably without the painful burns.

So she steals a spell from Isaac’s book. Just a small one. To summon a helper faerie.

This simple, selfish act unleashes the biggest karmic ass-kicking Madison could have ever imagined.

Poor Madison!

At first she thinks all is okay. A beautiful faerie arrives and cleans her house. Madison even befriends Brea—lending her clothes so she can explore the human realm. But Brea didn’t arrive alone. Her brother Reed came, too. And Reed wants Madison—badly. See, getting Madison to choose him over Isaac would be Reed’s ultimate revenge after their stand-off months before.

Fighting off Reed’s advances requires all of Madison’s strength and Isaac’s ingenuity.  But, Reed didn’t settle for a single-front attack, he’s tempting Chase as well. Madison realizes this just before crashing the family car and injuring Chase. In desperation, Madison enlists the aid of a crossroads demon to save her brother’s life.

Reed’s seduction of Madison escalates and her coven’s attempts to expel him are fruitless. Will Madison have no choice except to leave her family and love behind?

EMBRACE is Powerful

EmbraceFINALHow can a normal girl escape paranormal enemies?

She can’t.

But, as my Dad never said: “If you can’t beat them….”

In Cherie Colyer‘s EMBRACE, Madison Riley is facing the worst junior year ever.

Her boyfriend moved away, her classes stink, and she has to babysit her little brother all the time. But new-to-school, dreamboat Isaac seems to be interested…Very interested.

Still, it’s hard for Madison to enjoy her new romance when her BFF Kaylee is nearly killed in a car wreck  and then suffers psychotic episodes. No. Something is definitely wrong in Essex County.

Plus, longtime pal Paige is sincerely encroaching on the Isaac Territory.

Madison seems at the end of all things sane when she finally realizes things AREN’T sane. There is no way Kaylee could be so out-of-her-mind that she’s trapped in the psych ward.

Thing is…Madison knows all of this is wrong. And it’s Isaac who clues her in.

Kaylee’s been cursed.

By witches.

See, Isaac knows this because, well, he knows a WHOLE LOT ‘O WITCHY STUFF!

And, perhaps Madison does, too. If she really digs deep Madison might just find out that she’s a force to be reckoned with. It’s a power she needs to embrace.

Good thing for Kaylee, she does.

EMBRACE, a YA paranormal romance, really hits all the notes. Lost loves, New Loves, BFF’s, Teen Angst, and that soul searching feeling that all teens face. Madison takes each step with caution and this makes her a heroine in my eyes because she uses reason and intellect to solve her problems.

Time to EMBRACE!! Giveaway Alert

My dear friend, Cherie Colyer, is gearing up to release the second novel in her EMBRACE series, HOLD TIGHT. As gracious authors are wont to do, she’s offering up some delicious EMBRACE swag and building buzz for the new novel.MktgEmbraceQuotes3

I have already finished HOLD TIGHT and will release it’s review in time with the release date, August 20, but in the meantime I want to share some info about EMBRACE and links to contests that are currently running.

Madison is experiencing dramatic changes in life, school and relationships. The most cherished people seem to disappear from Madison’s life, leaving her scared to invest herself in any new relationships.

MktgEmbraceKissAs a new threat nearly kills her best friend Kailee, Madison must rely on Issac, a new boy in school who has powers that she can’t explain, to find the help Kailee needs. And, in the process, to save herself.

EMBRACE is contemporary paranormal YA. The pace is appropriate, language rich and clear, and the story makes a great read for anyone who likes teen romance mixed with their witchcraft.

Anyone who’d like to catch up with EMBRACE can pick it up on Amazon HERE!

Blessings abound!

It’s Saturday, and I’m having a super day. Why? Because this week I won 7 books!

1. A signed copy of: THE UNFINISHED WORK OF ELIZABETH D by Nichole Bernier courtesy of the Guide to Literary Agents Blog at Writer’s Digest. Oh! I just love that site!!! (Fourth book I’ve won as a commenter).

And a 6-pack of contemporary romance e-books from OmniFic Publishing for being part of the #Omnilicious Twitter party last night. So much fun!! I was able to interact with so many published ladies–who were great about answering any and all questions. Even Carol Oates out in Ireland who’d stayed up way past 2am local time to participate! Giant thanks to Cherie Colyer (@CherieColyer), a critique partner and OmniFic author, who invited me.

Will add reviews as soon as I finish.

On tap to read next?

TRANSPARENT by Natalie Whipple and THE BLUE BLAZES by a super awesome author Chuck Wendig. If you haven’t seen his blog at Terribleminds.com go now (just remember to come back here!)

Also making today awesome?  I had the excellent fortune to win FIVE items in the 2013 Brenda Novak Auction for diabetes research including swag but (most importantly!) I snagged a mini-critique from YA author Sara Hantz and a query critique and consultation with super-agent Gordon Warnock of Foreword Literary…I’m beside myself!

All for now!

V 🙂

PS. Still figuring out all the linky-links. And researching how to import covers…starting a blog is scary-fun…
