Making Things Right DIRTY WICKED–Review & Excerpt

dirty-wicked-tour-bannerHi there! Today I’m sharing a review for a new romantic suspense novella from Shayla Black. DIRTY WICKED is part of her Wicked Lovers series and features a disgraced PI helping his best friend’s widow find justice…and love.

11-5-dirtywickedAbout the book:
From New York Times bestselling author, Shayla Black…
After being framed for a crime he didn’t commit, former private eye Nick Navarro has nothing but revenge on his mind—until a woman from his past returns to beg for his help.
Beautiful widow Sasha Porter has been hunted by his enemies. Desperate, she offers him anything to keep her young daughter safe, even agreeing to become his mistress. The last thing either of them want are emotional entanglements but as they entrap the ruthless politician who arranged Nick’s downfall and passion sizzles between them, danger closes in.

Will he choose love over vengeance before it’s too late?

How about a little taste?

Nick Navarro had been out of prison exactly thirty-five hours. Long enough to get a good night’s sleep, stock up on a few necessities, and visit his old friends, the Santiago brothers. Then he’d started putting his P.I. skills to good use, methodically searching for the woman he hadn’t forgotten a single detail about during the fifteen months of his incarceration.

He intended to hunt down the bastards who had framed him and offed his childhood friend so he could repay them in spades.

Sasha Porter was the key.

At first glance, it looked as if she had disappeared off the face of the earth. She’d fled her house, quit her job, abandoned her car, maybe even changed her name. But his gut told him she was still alive. She had reasons to fight.

He would burn down the world until he found her.

Nick was forcing himself not to pace manically when his doorbell rang, sounding above the din of pounding rain. He zipped his gaze to the clock. Quarter ’til midnight. Obviously this wasn’t a social call. Had his late buddy’s enemy gotten wind of him shaking the trees for Sasha? Or had that corrupt son of a bitch just come back for another pound of flesh?

With every light in the living room on, Nick couldn’t pretend he wasn’t home. Besides, he refused to let this asshole think he was afraid. So he drew his weapon and jerked the door open, wearing a snarl.

Nick expected trouble, a gunfight, a battle for his life. Instead, Sasha Porter stood under his little portico, clinging near the door to avoid the deluge of November rain. Without a coat, she shivered. An exhausted little girl slept on her hip under a baby blanket, blond curls askew. A ragged duffel bag hung over her other arm. Rain had seeped through Sasha’s tattered blouse. Water ran down her cheek, which was marred with an unmistakable bruise. Dark circles discolored the skin under her hazel eyes, now wide with fear as she stared at his SIG. Cursing, Nick scrambled to holster his weapon.

My Review:
Nick Navarro is a PI just fresh out of prison. He was framed for raping a crooked DA’s niece, and while he was in jail his childhood best friend Mike Porter was murdered. Mike, an assistant district attorney, had sought Nick’s help getting evidence on his boss, DA Walter Clifford. Nick promised he’d take care of Sasha, Mike’s wife, if ever Mike got into trouble, but Nick had been locked away when she needed him.

Now out, Nick’s desperate to keep Sasha Porter, and her toddler daughter Harper, out of Clifford’s crossfire. She’s known the danger since the night before Mike was killed, but she’d never turn up on Nick’s doorstep if she wasn’t desperate. Clifford’s goons have hounded her steps for over a year, and Harper’s illness isn’t going away. Nick agrees to help–in return for Sasha’s full cooperation…in the bedroom.

Okay, okay, he’s not really that mercenary. His offer isn’t fully serious. He’s mad attracted to Sasha, but he’s not about to make her prostitute herself. Not when what he really wants is her full cooperation, anyway. He fell hard for Sasha when they first met–when she was Mike’s wife, and all he wants is for her to love him like she loved Mike. Not so easy. Still, we get a few cameos from previous stories, notably Xander, London and Javier and their adorable daughter, who take Harper so she’s out of the fray and can recuperate in safety. That leaves Sasha and Nick to hunt down evidence Mike had planted deep in the heart of New Orleans.

Naturally, along the way, the brute with the heart of gold wins over the shrinking violet, the bad goy gets worse, and the grand gesture gets completely out-of-hand…
I honestly liked the progression of Nick and Sasha’s affections, even if I felt the “L” word got thrown out there way too soon. The end was a little nutty–but justice was served with a side dish of cold revenge. So, HEA all the way, and a juicy interlude for the hero and his heroine.

Going All In On THE EDGE OF DOMINANCE–A Review

teod-blog-banner-v1
Hi there! Today I’m sharing a review for the newest book in the Doms of Her Life contemporary menage BDSM series from the writing team of Shayla Black, Jenna Jacob, and Isabella LaPearl. THE EDGE OF DOMINANCE is the fourth book in this series and needs to be read in order, for best enjoyment. I really liked the first three books, ONE DOM TO LOVE, THE YOUNG AND THE SUBMISSIVE and THE BOLD AND THE DOMINANT, but the stakes have gotten infinitely higher to keep these three dedicated lovers together.

04-teod-v6About the book:
Since Macen “Hammer” Hammerman shares the bond he’s long craved with Raine Kendall and his best friend, Liam O’Neill, he should be looking forward to a bright future. But a vengeful force from the past returns to cast a long shadow. As Hammer reels from a bombshell that exhumed struggles he’d buried after his late wife’s passing, he learns her death may not be ruled a suicide after all.

Worse, a figure from Raine’s childhood surfaces, determined to rip her away for good. As the threats against the trio multiply, Hammer must confront his demons while leaning on Liam to keep their new family intact. But with emotions running high and forces mounting against them, can their love survive so they can finally live happily ever after?

My Review:
This is the fourth book in a contemporary, menage, BDSM romance series and should be read in order. Raine, Liam and Macen are a triad, two Doms and Raine their sub. They have had a rough few months working out the trouble in their kink, but that was nothing compared to the thriller climax of book three.

Raine survived being kidnapped and nearly murdered. By her own father. Yep.

Okay, well, Macen feels a lot of guilt that he “allowed” Raine’s psychotic father near enough to get her in his grip. And, that’s affecting their relationship. Raine suffers flashbacks to her imprisonment, near-rape, and near-death–and she’s getting help for it. And Liam? This dude’s family is off-the-scale. I nearly fell over reading their escapades. That said, the main conflict of this story is a fabrication that puts Macen in jeopardy of arrest. Someone inside his BDSM club, Shadows, has provided the cops with some surveillance tapes that seems to show Raine being exploited, and possibly raped–it wasn’t that, which we all know from the first book, but the cops are on a mission. Add to that Raine’s long-lost brother River has returned, spouting crazy claims he’d heard from their father–and River wants Raine as far from her “pimps” as he can carry her–by force if necessary.

I really liked how this all unraveled. Expect a mystery, and the revenge of a woman scorned to tear Macen from his beloved Liam and Raine, for a short time, anyhow. In the end, however, truth triumphs over prejudice, Raine helps her Doms and learns to better submit, and the whole happy family is a wee bit larger than it started. I liked how there’s a new romance story building already, between secondary characters that have become fixtures in the series. So, we can surely expect another menage, soon. And, that’ll give us all a chance to watch Raine, Macen, Liam and their “love” grow.

Lots of sexytimes, far less angst and a sweet sweet ending are in your future. Just ask Liam’s mother…

Hearts Won in THE BOLD AND THE DOMINANT–A Review

Hi there! Today I’m sharing a review for a contemporary BDSM novel from the writing team of Shayla Black, Jenna Jacob, and Isabella LaPearl. THE BOLD AND THE DOMINANT is the third book in the Doms of Her Life series and should be read after ONE DOM TO LOVE and THE YOUNG AND THE SUBMISSIVE. I’m all caught up and ready for tomorrow’s release of THE EDGE OF DOMINANCE… Stay tuned for that book’s review next week!

bold-and-domAbout the book:
After spending weeks trying to reach Raine Kendall, Dominants Liam O’Neill and Macen Hammerman have finally broken past the walls to their submissive’s wounded heart. Before they can enjoy their newfound closeness, Liam’s past comes back to haunt him when his ex-wife drops in—with a secret that could tear his world apart. Forced to leave Raine in Hammer’s care, Liam is stuck on the outside, stewing in frustration and insecurity…and wondering if Raine no longer needs him or if Hammer alone completes her.

Always the pillar of strength, Hammer tries to help Liam while sheltering their woman. But Raine soon discovers the truth that threatens the trio’s chance of a happily-ever-after. Determined to hold them together, the two men cook up a scheme to uncover the ex’s secret. When an old nemesis returns and targets Raine, can Liam and Hammer come together to slay the danger and save the woman they both love?

My Review:
Liam, Hammer and Raine have finally completed their menage, which seems all to the good, except that Liam’s ex-wife, Gwyneth, has come to LA in search of Liam–with a bombshell baby she claims is his. Knowing he can’t trust her, he stows her away in safer quarters until he can verify the child’s paternity. He doesn’t want to freak Raine out, so Liam and Macen decide to keep Gwyneth and the potential Liam Jr a secret.

This builds real problems, because Raine is a very perceptive gal. Why is her new Dom gone so much, and why is he so snappish? She’s just spending time with Macen because he’s supposed to be there for her… Doesn’t Liam know she loves him too?

While they are struggling with the dynamics of the menage, Raine’s abusive father gets back in the mix. He wants more money from Macen to keep his mouth shut–over a trumped up years-old indecency charge. Though Macen refuses to pay, Gwyneth isn’t above a bit of scheming to make sure Raine isn’t around for Liam to love. Just when it seemed Raine, Macen and Liam got everything back in stride…the absolute worst happens, and it’s a countdown to save Raine from what looks to be certain death.

This one got dark, dark, dark. Readers should be advised of rape and domestic violence triggers. That said, it’s definitely a happy ending for all the characters, they just had to survive the typhoon first. I really enjoyed how the menage got stronger here, and how Raine took some time to think when she got upset, instead of run, as she had been doing previously. It’s a bit of a different sort of cliffhanger at the end of this one–bringing us back to a problem we’d thought solved two books ago, but that’s cool. I’m excited to see where it all goes in the fourth book.

Not Easy Being THE YOUNG AND THE SUBMISSIVE–A Review

Hi there! Today I’m sharing a review for a contemporary BDSM novel from the writing team of Shayla Black, Jenna Jacob, and Isabella LaPearl. THE YOUNG AND THE SUBMISSIVE is the sequel to ONE DOM TO LOVE. I’m catching up so I’m ready when the next book drops in September. TYatS had a whole lot more loving, but also a whole lot more fighting, as Raine, Liam and Hammer work themselves into a sexy menage.

The Young and the Submissive (The Doms of Her Life, #2)About the book:
Raine Kendall has everything a woman could want…almost. Sexy, tender Dom Liam O’Neill is her knight in shining armor, but Raine is constantly pinching herself. Is he too good to be true or is this growing connection one that could last a lifetime? She’s constantly torn by her abiding feelings for her commanding boss, Macen “Hammer” Hammerman, especially in the wake the mind-blowing night he cast aside the barriers between them and ravaged every inch of her body.

Hammer, Liam’s former best friend, can’t stop coveting Raine. But Liam is determined to hold and guide the woman he loves and see if she can be the submissive of his dreams. However, he’s finding that her trust is hard won and he needs a bloody crowbar to pry open her scarred soul. So he risks everything to win her once and for all. But once he’s put his daring plan in motion, will it cost Liam his heart if he loses Raine to Hammer for good?

My Review:
This is the second book in a contemporary BDSM menage romance and is best enjoyed when read in order.

Raine has spent six years in love with her dark knight, Macen “Master Hammer” Hammerman, ever since he took her in off the streets when she escaped her abusive father’s attempted rape. Hammer may run a BDSM dungeon, but he’d never force a partner–and he’s never wanted to abuse petite Raine. He’s loved her, but fears his own dark desire might be too much for her. Plus, she’s now connecting with his best friend and fellow Dom, Liam’O’Neill. Years ago Liam and Macen shared Macen’s wife, Juliet. It seemed a perfect arrangement, but wasn’t, and the men are gun-shy about sharing another sub.

Even if that’s what Raine needs.

This book is all about working in the kinks, and part of that is Liam and Hammer learning how to share. Their bickering is freaking Raine out, even before they decide to try a menage. Liam has collared Raine, but she can’t give her whole heart and submission to him, on account of having such a longing and respect for Macen. For my part, I was ready to kick Macen out of bed, empty chip bag or not. He’s a mental whirlwind, and devious. In the previous book he did the unthinkable, tried to claim Raine after she accepted Liam as her Master–and his treachery isn’t small, because he didn’t protect Raine when she was truly vulnerable.

Liam’s tender and loving, but he struggles with Raine’s silence. She may not lie, but she sure doesn’t tell the whole truth. His biggest gambit seems to all but fail, until some friends intervene. I really liked Beck, the dungeon’s resident sadist, and how he was the right kind of tough to get Raine back on track. These guys are a little bit silly, to me. They practice D/s but they aren’t hard 24/7 which was a relief. Liam and Hammer get on board with Beck’s plan to work together, and that’s the best part of the book–also the end, mostly. Expect a sated sub, two frazzled Doms and a smart aleck surgeon to save the day. While it’s the end of the book, it’s just the beginning of their new menage. I found this one to be both more sexy and more romantic than the first book.

Tough Times Finding ONE DOM TO LOVE–A Review

Hi there! Today I’m sharing a review for a contemporary BDSM novel from the writing team of Shayla Black, Jenna Jacob, and Isabella LaPearl. ONE DOM TO LOVE is the first in a four book menage series, and I’m catching up so I’m ready when the next book drops in September.

One Dom to Love (The Doms of Her Life, #1)About the book:

Raine Kendall has been in love with her boss, Macen Hammerman, for years. Determined to make the man notice that she’s a grown woman with desires and needs, she pours out her heart and offers her body to him—only to be crushingly rejected. But when his friend, very single, very sexy Liam O’Neill watches the other Dom refuse to act on his obvious feelings for Raine, he resolves to step in and do whatever it takes to help Hammer find happiness again, even rousing his friend’s possessive instincts by making the girl a proposition too tempting to refuse. But he never imagines that he’ll end up falling for her himself.

Hammer has buried his lust for Raine for years. After rescuing the budding runaway from an alley behind his exclusive BDSM Dungeon, he has come to covet the pretty submissive. But tragedy has taught him that he can never be what she needs. So he watches over her while struggling to keep his distance. Liam’s crafty plan blindsides Hammer, especially when he sees how determined his friend is to possess Raine for his own. Hammer isn’t ready to give the lovely submissive over to any other Dom, but can he heal from his past and fight for her? Or will he lose Raine if she truly gives herself—heart, body, and soul—to Liam?

My Review:

Raine was an abused child, the last to leave home when she ran away at age 17, six years ago. She was discovered by Macen Hammerman, also known as Master Hammer, lurking in the alley outside his home/Dungeon. He took her in, got her medical attention, paid for her college education and keeps her as a general purpose employee. He’s mad for her, but won’t touch her–or let anyone else do that–because he’s afraid his true desires, to have her enter a Master/slave 24/7 domination contract, break her–just like he experienced with his late wife.

Master Liam is Hammer’s best friend. They have been close since they shared Hammer’s wife in a menage, but that was before Juliet killed herself eight years ago. Now struggling with his own ex-wife’s infidelity, Liam has joined Hammer’s dungeon. He’s attracted to Raine, and confused by Hammer’s hands-off edict. Liam sees that Raine suffers with lack of direction, and lack of affection. And, also, that Raine’s fed up with Hammer ignoring her blatant admiration.

Because Hammer won’t move without a shove, Liam decides to offer to train Raine, and in the interim, her acting out causes Hammer to require her punishment. It’s a heartbreaking moment, but Liam’s the savior Raine’s long-since gave up wanting. Not that anything is simple. Nope. Hammer wants what he now can’t have. And, while Liam wanted to provoke Hammer’s jealous streak, he’s finding himself quite smitten with Raine. Raine’s torn, between the man she’s loved for six years, and the man who seems to want to build a future with her.

While there’s lots of sexy in this one, not all of it is sexy. I wanted to smash Hammer’s nose, at least three times, and felt myself nearly submitting to Liam’s deft charms. Oh, that thick Irish brogue was delicious, too, if only in my mind. The scene is set for a love triangle to best all others, and path that clearly leads to healing via menage for Liam and Hammer. I liked Raine, and Liam lots, and I’m excited to see how their training goes, especially as Hammer’s got plans to thwart it.
