They Had STARS IN THEIR EYES–Review and Giveaway

SITE BT BannerHi there! Today I’m reviewing a New Adult Romance From Lauren Blakely. STARS IN THEIR EYES features a young paparazzo ekeing out her college tuition by following where the stars go–and the young private eye who up-ends her world.

SiTE-AmazonGRSWAbout the book:

A sexy and swoony new adult romance…

Celebrity photographer and college senior Jess Leighton desperately needs to crash the wedding of the year. Snapping just one pic of the A-list Hollywood couple tying the knot will pay her way through grad school. But with security tighter than the bride-to-be’s corset, she’ll need more than her camera and smarts, she’ll need help from her biggest rival–hot, British, motorcycle-riding William Harrigan, whose sexy accent can melt the panties off any woman. He’s the last person Jess should trust, but he’s her only ticket in.

William Harrigan wants one thing – to stay in L.A. past college graduation. With a student visa set to expire, the clock is ticking. When he lands a gig that pairs him with the beautiful blond spitfire Jess, he’s scored his best shot at living out the American dream. Winning her trust would be a whole lot easier, however, if he didn’t have ulterior motives…

But there’s no faking the intense attraction between them. Try as they might to resist each other, soon sparks are flying, as they devise a plan to sneak into the ceremony. But when Jess’ new celebrity client raises the stakes, she starts to smell blackmail, and soon she and Will are chasing down cheating directors, staking out clandestine trysts, and making fake IDs, all while sneaking scene-stealing kisses and hot nights together.

The audience loves a happy ending, but in a town where everyone’s acting and no one’s playing by the rules, can Jess and William find their own ever after in time?

**Stars in Their Eyes is the start of the sexy, swoony and scandalous new adult series Wrapped Up in Love, which is a spin-off of the NYT and USA Today Bestselling Caught Up in Love series. You don’t need to have read Caught Up in Love to follow this new series, but you’ll likely enjoy those books!*

20141017-075152.jpgMy Review:
The review copy I read contained the novella A STARSTRUCK KISS, which introduces us to Jess Leighton and William Harrigan. Jess is a college senior and has been a paparazzo for the past few years. Her family’s fortune disappeared in her high school years leaving her without a college fund, but this didn’t stop Her. She’s got a regular contact who feeds her tips and she returns the favors with photos for cash as she slowly builds her money up to pay for medical school. She is driven and focused, and fears she has new competition from her tipster in the for of sexy, British college student William.

William is a terrible paparazzo. He knows virtually nothing of celebrities, and seems more interested in tracking down Jess than a good pic, but he needs a real job in the US if he wants to stay here. And BOY does he want to stay–especially after meeting acid-tongued Jess. She pushes all his naughty buttons. Jess rebuffs William, at first. She’s had serious problems losing herself in a guy before–and she won’t sacrifice her grades to spend time with William. Problem is, the more time they spend staking out star sightings, the more their camaraderie builds and the more her attraction grows.

Jess has a lead on the Wedding of the Year pic, one whose sale would yield enough money to cover a good bit of med school, but blows it in favor of saving the dog of uber-famous sister-of-the-bride, Riley Belle. Riley’s gratitude is palpable, and Jess is sure she has an in on the wedding shots, if she treads carefully. Unfortunately, she discovers William to be a sham of a paparazzo about this time, right when she started falling for him.

What William has going for him, however, is an invite to Riley’s sister’s wedding, and he’ll bring Jess if she’ll divulge her secrets to paparazzo-life. It’s kind of a no-brainer proposition.

STARS IN THER EYES picks up with Jess and William planning the bust into Riley Belle’s sister’s wedding, and Jess selling down-and-dirty shots of Riley canoodling with her director. Jess has a serious crisis of conscience that William solves with a bit of his detective work. The romance between William and Jess sparks and it gets mostly-down-and-pretty-dirty, too.

The complications are real, and portrayed realistically. William struggles to land a permanent job to support a work visa while Jess struggles with her feelings, and her disappointments–especially questioning if William is honest with her, or not. Does he really care for her, or is he playing her? If so, at what cost? Jess has suffered from bulimia in the past, and she’s afraid it will re-trigger if she gets attached to William only to find he’s using her…

Jess suffers a mini-breakdown over her relationship with William while having lunch with Riley, even confessing her whole sordid double-life as a paparazzo and the results? True Hollywood. The book is an HEA at the very, final end, but the getting there is fraught with tension. I really enjoyed both Jess and William, though I felt their connection was a bit rushed. Also, as a mother of a child with ED-NOS (eating disorder, not otherwise specified) I had issues with Jess’s bulimia. She has a seriously unhealthy relationship with food, even if she isn’t binge/purge at this time; I wouldn’t want any reader to mistake Jess for “cured,” or even managed.

The smexytimes are good. Because this relationship develops in a compressed timeframe, the “slower build” of their intimacy is kinda misleading. Still, it’s well-written with plenty of emotional grounding.

Interested? You can find STARS IN THEIR EYES on Goodreads, Amazon, iBooks, and Barnes & Noble. A STARSTRUCK KISS is also available, FREE, and it should be read first, in my opinion. Grab it off Amazon, B&N, iBooks or Kobo.

They Were MAKING HEADLINES–Review and Giveaway

image
Hi there! Today I’m reviewing a New Adult romance newly released by Erin Brown. (For those who got an incomplete post yesterday, I’ll have to plead trackpad failure, and I have the work order from the Apple Store to prove it!) MAKING HEADLINES is a book about making mistakes, making due, and making even, and I really enjoyed it.

imageAbout the book:
When a one-night stand turns into an online photo scandal, Sophie Tucker and Luke McGraw become campus celebrities overnight for all the wrong reasons.

Sophie Tucker can’t wait to start her freshman year of college—she has a full scholarship to her dream school and her sights set on landing a coveted staff writer position on the college newspaper. But when a scandalous photo from a one night stand she barely remembers is posted on The Score List, a new tabloid-style gossip site the campus is buzzing about, Sophie realizes her freshman year isn’t going to be what she imagined. As more photos are posted, Sophie decides to use her journalistic prowess to take down the anonymous person behind the site.

Luke McGraw is that guy—the vice president of his fraternity, the online editor of the school newspaper, and the one every girl wants to date. When a photo of Sophie, the girl he hooked up with the night before classes started and can’t get out of his head, shows up on The Score List, he knows that he has to find out who is behind the site—both to avenge Sophie, and to save the reputation of his fraternity.

When Sophie and Luke realize they’re both investigating, they decide to team up. But focusing on the investigation instead of each other proves difficult, especially when neither of them are sure the other can be trusted.

In a story full of the scandal, mystery, intrigue, friendship, and cheeky, sexy romance, Making Headlines channels Veronica Mars and Greek, in the companion novel to Taking Flight.

My Review:
I’m just gonna say this, being a college freshman is hard. But Sophie Tucker makes it really hard. There were a few times her antics made me shake my head, and her fictional travails are no blueprint for How To on campus life, more the opposite.

The first day of classes Sophie wakes up hungover in a strange man’s bed. She doesn’t know his name, but he remembers all of the night prior, and he’s actually decent enough to accompany her on the Walk of Shame. Aside: There’s a LOT in the news about date rape on college campuses and bedding a gal who is wasted is REALLY not something I condone…ever. That said, what is described in this book, a gal pounding away at the booze and being coherent, but completely uninhibited, is not an unlikely scenario. Sophie doesn’t feel like she was raped, but she does feel that she made a VERY POOR CHOICE. (We agree on this.)

After hearing from her roommate that her mystery bedmate is a well-known player, and newspaper editor Luke McGraw, Sophie’s even more mortified, but she plays this down as a life decision she’d rather not repeat. And, she tells this to Luke when she sees him after her class that morning. Luke was actually hoping for a second, sober, shot at dating Sophie, but has other business to address first. Turns out some jackwad posted pictures of her and Luke from the night before and that morning’s walk home online in some online rag calling itself The Score List. The pics aren’t nude, but they are suggestive, and label Sophie as a slut in the inaugural post, and that is really problematic.

Luke suspects he was the original target, well the one who was meant to be hurt–which is odd because he’d been all but cropped out of the pics. He actually confesses to being Sophie’s partner when he learns there will be an exposé of the Score List website in order to lessen the fallout on Sophie. So, Luke is portrayed in a pretty positive light. He’s attracted to Sophie–for more than her looks–and eagerly wants to shut down the Score List, as its updates have featured five students, so far.

Sophie uses Luke’s interest to her advantage–keep your enemies closer, amiright?–and actually begins to get some feels for Luke, putting her in the awkward position of investigating her pseudo-boyfriend. Can’t fault her logic: He had the opportunity to get the pics taken, and he’s an editor of the school’s online newspaper, so he knows how to work a website. Her suspicions end up getting back to Luke, however, which sours the romance factor. Still, these two continue to seek out the mastermind of the Score List, Sophie going “undercover” to link up with computer programming majors to assist with the online hack-jobs while Luke hunts down the original photographer and sets up a sting to catch the webmaster.

It’s actually a well-plotted contemporary mystery, with appropriate calls to question ethics in journalism, morals in society, and the interpersonal dynamics of campus life. Despite being a legacy Sophie is shunned by all sororities (even her mother’s house) after her “scandal” and she deals with her mother’s disappointment in a mature way. Even her manner of brushing off the Score List is pretty badass. Lots of people would cower, afraid for more notoriety, but Sophie screws her courage to the sticking place and eventually triumphs over the scandal.

And, speaking of sticking, Luke sticks around. He’s found a partner in Sophie, even if she’s a bit too cavalier to accept his overtures, at first. Apparently a crap previous boyfriend put her off relationships, but Luke’s steadfastness eventually wears down her resistance. This New Adult romance is a bit mature–some scenes of hard partying and casual-ish sex probably elevate it out of YA, but Sophie’s a college freshman so I think it will resonate as a “cautionary tale” for some upper YA readers. While this book is part of a planned series, there is no cliffhanger.

She Doesn’t Let Life BEAT Her Down–Review and Giveaway

Hi there! Today I’m sharing a new release from Amity Cross. BEAT is a new-adult fighter romance that doesn’t pull any punches.

About the book:
Renee “Ren” Miller was five when her Dad left to go to the shops and never came back. Left to grow up with a cancer riddled mother, things have never been easy for a teenager who had to be wise beyond her years. Then one day they lose the battle and she’s all alone.

Now twenty-two, Ren reluctantly goes to find her estranged father. He owns the down and out boxing studio, Beat, and Ren finds herself drawn to the ring. She thrives on learning a new way of fighting a life that kept kicking her down…instead of struggling against the current, she kicks it right between the legs.

Then one day, Ash Fuller, her Dad’s star fighter comes back to town. Mysterious, handsome… Dangerous… Everything Ren doesn’t need.

But he’s got other ideas… …and so does she.

Excerpt:

My fist slammed into the heavy leather bag, the impact jolting up my arm and absorbing into my torso.

The only light was from the back row of fluorescents I’d switched on over the ring. It was dark, murky and helped me pretend I was someplace else. The drama from the daylight hours was gone and it was just me and the darkness. Exactly the way I liked it.

I began another set of punches, hair sticking to the sweat beading across the back of my neck. Structure. This was the only thing that was predictable in my life and I needed predictable.

Stance. Guard. Punch. Guard. Repeat.

There was a loud cough behind me and I spun on my heel, heart thumping in my chest, and my gaze collided with Ash’s.

“Fuck,” I exclaimed, holding a hand over my heart. “Don’t fucking do that, Ash.” Typical. The creeper was being all creeper again.

“What are you doing?” He stared at me, his gaze hovering a little too long on my bare midriff.

I steadied the bag with one hand, taking deep breaths. “What does it look like?”

“I’ve never seen…” He trailed off and I wondered if I’d finally made the Golden Boy lost for words.

I turned my back so I didn’t have to look at him. “What? A woman in a sports bra? Highly doubt it.” I rolled my eyes and wiped my forehead with the back of my arm. Even though I couldn’t see, I felt his gaze burning into my skin and I suppressed the urge to squeeze my thighs together. Infuriating, self-absorbed, arrogant…

My Review:
Renee’s had a tough life–abandoned as a child by a two-timing father, she helped to care for her ill mother until the struggle was lost. Now, she’s reconnected to her dad–fulfilling her mum’s dying wish, only to find she’s still the black stain on his life. He’d found himself a prettier wife and had a prettier daughter long before he walked out on them.

He’s not heartless, however. Knowing Ren is destitute her dad offers up the spare bedroom at his trianing club. It’s little more than a storage closet with a bed, but (literally) beggars can’t be choosers and Ren accepts. Of course it puts Ren in daily contact not only with her father, but with her preening half-sister, just a year younger than Ren. And, also with some serious beefcake fighters training for the Australian Ultimate Fighter circuit.

Ren has a lot of wounds. She’s heartsick with loss and feels unwanted in general–so she takes up training in the gym as it’s the only outlet she has available. She attends the beginner’s fighting courses, and excels, keeping her strength training for the evenings when she’s alone. One night she’s startled by an intruder int he gym, but it’s just a former trainee–Ash, the “golden boy” of her father’s career. He’d been banned from the league four years ago and disappeared, but now he’s back and inserting himself into the scene.

And Ren’s fantasies.

These two have quite the awkward dance. Ash doesn’t want to mess around with his coach’s daughter, but he’s lonely, and attracted. Ren, always unwanted, hates the attention Ash gives Monica. She trains harder and harder, never realizing that she’s only endearing herself more tot he taciturn man who comes in for his midnight sparring sessions looking like he just got beat up.

It does get hot and heavy, but it also gets bloody, and illegal once Ren discovers where Ash earns his cash–an illegal fighting club. But does, this beat Ren off? Nope. Suit the gal up, coach. She’s ready to play.

The book moves along very nicely. Ren is a good character. For all that she’s had to endure, she bears her crosses without self-pity or angst. Even with all the hoopla, it’s easy to see how her father becomes interested, and even makes overtures to help–more than he had at the beginning, any how. Ren makes friends–for pretty much the first time in her life. And she finds attraction and affection based on her own merit. I really liked her story. Ash begins as a mystery, but we learn a lot about him–not how he got banned for professional boxing, per se, but what he was doing while everyone thought he was training in Thailand.

The story is told in Australian English, which was a small learning curve for this American Anglophile, but fun. I’m always game for a new dialect. The smexytimes were well-written and not too sloppy, with a good build-up; no instalove here. BEAT ends with a (small) cliffhanger, but it’s not enough to detract from the story.

Interested? You can find BEAT on Goodreads, AMAZON (US / UK / AU),  KOBO, B&N, and iTUNES. The second book in this series, PULSE, will be out soon.

They Solved A PERFECT DILEMMA–Review and Giveaway

Hi all! Today I’m reviewing A PERFECT DILEMMA, the third book in the Perfect Secret series from Zoe Dawson. For other stops on the tour, click here. Like the first two books int he series, this is a SEXY New Adult romance with a whole lotta bayou heat.

APD Amazon GR SW(1)
About the book:
The one secret she can’t stand to keep is the one she can’t afford to tell.
The perfect little rich girl, River Pearl Sutton has always done what her family expected of her. She’d become the perfect little beauty queen, the perfect child model and now her global success locks her into a life she never really chose.

Coming home for the summer to prepare for the Founder’s Day Festival, a celebration of her lauded ancestor, she is tasked by her father to write a speech to be delivered at the end of the party.

Returning to Hope Parish brings her back into close proximity with sweet-talking, skirt-chasing Braxton Outlaw, the boy who always seemed immune to her charms in high school. But now he looks at her with those challenging blue eyes, both intimidating and seductive at the same time. Using research of her family lineage and his as way to get close to this bad boy, they fall into a hot, torrid affair.

She stumbles across a terrible secret that could bring to ruin not only her reputation, but the reputation and standing of her family. But when her infatuation with Brax grows into something that she can’t live without, she must decide what to do. Keep the secret and lose Brax or destroy her family and lose them.

It’s an awful, heartrending perfect dilemma.

My Review:
River Pearl Sutton is a model daughter, and a model period. She’s been all over the world in fashion shows and glam mags, but she longs to follow her dreams of art school and painting–not enter another pageant to please her mama. While researching a new angle on the history of her town–and I mean HER town–Suttontowne was founded by her great great grandaddy, Colonel Sutton. River Pearl learns of a secret between the Colonel and the shame of Suttontowne, Duel Outlaw.

150 years ago Duel was hanged by a lynch mob on the suspicion that he robbed a cache of gold that was due the Confederate army. Turns out the Colonel and Duel had been best friends and Duel’s execution may have been unwarranted. Can one runway model turn the tide of hate against Duel’s grandkids–most importantly uber-sexy Braxton Outlaw?

Braxton Outlaw will never marry. He’s seen the way Outlaw women get treated in Suttontowne–cursed, spat upon, nudged and tumbled–his mama took a whole lotta abuse after his no-good thief of a daddy up and disappeared leaving her destitute with triplet sons. All grown now, Brax has is super bad for River Pearl, but he knows the score in Suttontowne–any woman he associates with becomes a pillar of scorn to the community; and her daddy sure won’t want any no account Outlaw on his doorstep. But what Daddy can’t hear climbing through River Pearl’s bedroom window sure won’t trouble him none.

The book’s a bit of Romeo and Juliet–with the clandestine love affair simmering away. Don’t worry. There’s some serious double-crossing and double-exonerations to with the double-O’s. It’s a fine addition to the sultry bayou collection complete with a high-stakes battle and a gator feed. In the meantime, Brax comes to terms with his frustration of being an Outlaw in the town where history is long and prejudice is longer. I enjoyed this book–it’s a quick read with decent heat and a likeable cast.

Interested? You can find A PERFECT DILEMMA on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iTunes.

A Perfect Mess CoverA Perfect Mistake coverA PERFECT DILEMMA is the third book in the A Perfect Secret series. I’ve reviewed the other two books–and they were interesting, spicy New Adult reads. They are all stand-alone novels with some common characters and no cliffhangers.

If you’re thirstin’ for an entertaining quick read these Bayou books might could wet your whistle. Check out my reviews for either A PERFECT MESS or A PERFECT MISTAKE.

excerpt

Clamping her eyes on the wash of tears that threatened, Ireland ignored the wailing of her heart … and laid a palm to each of their cheeks. One lone tear snuck between her lashes at the cascade of tingles seeping up her arms.

“You can’t blame them for not understanding,” a familiar voice drawled behind her.

She spun as he neared, leaving Rip and Noah wheezing for breath—or, more likely, completion of her task.

Techno-colored flowers bloomed in a colorless world each time the sole of Ridley’s shoes met the earth. The crisp cut of his white, tailored suit was accented by a burst of color from the button-down shirt beneath that changed in hue to match the species of flowers that sprung to life. Hydrangeas blue. Orchid purple. Lily fuchsia. Rose coral. As he neared, Ireland noticed his eyes morphed to match as well. The result hypnotic.

His haggard and troubled façade was a thing of the past. The man before her exuded confidence and a zest for life from every pore. The draw of which was so magnetic Ireland had to fight to keep her feet planted while her body insisted she close the distance between them.

“To them this is a thrill, a game of chicken against the Reaper himself.” Ridley paused beside her, his shoulder skimming hers. Even then he didn’t grace her with a glance, his attention fixed on Rip and Noah. Tipping his head toward her, the warmth of his breath teased over her breast bone. “For us, it’s destiny.”

The moment he stepped away from her, the chill of solitude lashed at Ireland’s soul and cut deep. Bending eye-level with her withering subjects, Ridley pursed his rose petal lips to blow a soft, healing breath over both of them. Wan complexions of the dying were ripened to plump apricot. Both men blinked away their disappointment before dipping in a low bow—foreheads to the ground in a show of respect.

“No need for that, boys.” Ridley smoothed the front of his suit coat, a self-depreciating chuckle playing over his lips.

Neither humbled servant budged.

“You’re like me?” Pacing in a slow circle around him, Ireland’s eye narrowed.

He matched her steps, leading them in an intimate waltz normally reserved for predators—or lovers.

“Like you?” He tsked. “Oh no, my darling flower. There is no other like you. Our only similarity is being pawns in a game that began centuries before either of our fathers got an amorous gleam in their eyes.”

Ireland’s gaze lingered over the soft curve of his mouth, wondering if his lips could possibly taste as delectable as they looked. “How do we play?”

Curling one finger into a ruffled tuft of her skirt, Ridley pulled her to him. Bowing his head, he brushed his cheek over the delicate curve of her collarbone. “The game is already in motion,” he murmured. “The rule sheet not meant for our eyes. All we can do now is stay alive.”

Ireland weaved her fingers into his hair, yanking his head back with a passion driven force that bordered on violent. “I’ve taken lives. I’m a monster,” she snarled against his lips, tormenting them both with the agonizing veil of energy that denied their touch.

His hand snaked up her arm to find her fingers and loosen her grasp. Palm to palm. Fingers entwined with fingers. “Does granting it make me any better?”

Ridley didn’t give her time to answer. With one hand pressed to the small of her back he crushed her to him.  Their lips met with a desperate urgency that caused Heaven and Earth to quake in nervous anticipation of what was coming …

I personally loved CRANE. What a great concept–that a young woman could be the long-lost descendant of Ichabod Crane and channel his spirit to achieve balance in the historical novel. Rip Van Winkle was her trusty…er, informant. Except when he got scared and passed out. He was a total hoot! Check out my review here.

The Horseman is unending,

his presence shan’t lessen.

If you break the curse,

you become the legend.

Washington Irving and Rip Van Winkle had no choice but to cover up the deadly truth behind Ichabod Crane’s disappearance. Centuries later, a Crane returns to Sleepy Hollow awakening macabre secrets once believed to be buried deep.

What if the monster that spawned the legend lived within you?

Now, Ireland Crane, reeling from a break-up and seeking a fresh start, must rely on the newly awakened Rip Van Winkle to discover the key to channeling the darkness swirling within her. Bodies are piling high and Ireland is the only one that can save Sleepy Hollow by embracing her own damning curse.

But is anyone truly safe when the Horseman rides?

Forgiveness softens even the hardest of hearts…

After the devastating loss of her Companion, the last thing Halena Girard can stomach is the emotional connection to a Mate. She lives for only two things: vanquishing demons, and seeking Artifacts rumored to lead to Lucifer’s downfall. That is, until she’s attacked by a…frat boy? Worse, a newly-demonic frat boy wearing the mark of her Mate.

Halena would rather kill Slade than give him her heart. Unfortunately, the only way Slade can find his sister and get Halena the Artifacts is to work together. Young genius, Sadie Nowland, has got life figured out. Graduating college at the age of eighteen and accepting a six-figure job is just what she needs to prove she’s made something of herself. But when a strange tattoo mysteriously appears on her shoulder and Theo starts talking about Mates, it catapults her neatly laid out life into chaos.

It’s All About CLAIMING CALLIE (and Shoes)…A Review

Hi there! Today I’m sharing the first two parts of a New Adult serial–from Paige Rion. CLAIMING CALLIE is a fun, flirty plot featuring one orphaned shopaholic, Callie, and Dean–younger brother to Callie’s BFF, Jinny.

Claiming Callie.v1Claiming Callie – Part One BLURB
Her love of Michael Kors might be her downfall.
Callie Cartwright is a college senior on the verge of graduating and getting the job of her dreams. But her illustrious shopping habit and expensive tastes backfire when her future employer gives her an ultimatum. She has less than six months to lower her debt or she’ll lose the job she’s worked so hard for.

His secret crush may be his undoing.
Dean Michaels has everything going for him. He’s a manager at the local coffee shop, a sophomore in college, star of the university basketball team, and don’t forget, gorgeous. The only thing he needs is the girl of his dreams to make his world complete. And he’s finally ready to go after her. The only problem: it’s his sister’s best friend he’s crushing on. And all she sees in him is the love for a brother.

But desperate times call for desperate measures.
When Callie concocts a crazy plan as a way to make quick money and pay down her debt, Dean’s feelings go into overdrive. It’s time to show her how he feels.

And the plan he proposes, just might be the one to finally catch the girl.

*Claiming Callie is part one of a series of four serial novellas and is approximately 28,000 words in length (about half the length of a full novel).*

*Contains adult language.

My Review:
Callie has a mountain of debt and a shopping addiction. She’s a college senior, and has a great job lined up but her bad credit is about to kill the firm’s offer. She has 5 months to improve her credit, so she hatches a plan to curtail her spending–by becoming an escort.

No, this isn’t THAT kind of book. Callie’s intentions are innocent–she will be a dinner companion for lonely men, ONLY. This idea absolutely sends Dean, her BFF’s younger brother into fits. Why? Because Dean’s been crushing on Callie pretty much since his voice changed. THe idea of her dating scummy men for money is just…no.

Dean’s 20 and gaga for Callie–he even offers her money to help pay down her debt, if she will back down on her plans. She doesn’t, and–unfortunately–it’s a bit disastrous.

How does a gal get over a libelous exposé in the school paper labeling her as a prostitute, I wonder?

Anywho, Callie comes to terms with her spending issues, Dean helps with damage control, and we’ve got one cheesed-off suitor likely to make waves in the next installment. This is a fun and flirty quick read. Looking forward to finding out how these kids move forward—in their new “arrangement”. (This romance is PG-13 for sexual situations and some slurs.)

Interested? You can find CLAIMING CALLIE (Part One) on Goodreads and Amazon.

Claiming-Callie2.v2-AmClaiming Callie – part two:
He’s the man of her dreams. She just doesn’t know it yet.
Dean Michaels has nothing to lose and, after all these years, he’s finally hatched a plan to win the heart of his long-time crush Callie Cartwright. Operation Get the Girl is on. For however long it takes, she will pretend to be his girlfriend in an effort to make his ex jealous and win back her affections. What Callie doesn’t know is that Dean only has eyes for her, and his plan is simply a ploy to win her heart.

But with Callie’s job hanging in the balance, her future uncertain, and the anniversary of her parents’ death looming, Dean’s scheme is one more thing adding to the chaos of her life.

Will his plan work? Or will it backfire, leaving him brokenhearted?

My Review:

Callie is on a mission. She’s going to win Dean’s ex, Maya, back for him–by whatever means necessary. Soon, these two are canoodling all over campus, strategically-located on Maya’s routes. Maya begins to take notice, and she’s frustrated, because she doesn’t believe that Callie actually likes Dean–which is partly true. I mean, well, she loves Dean like a brother–but that’s it.

In the meantime, Dean is dying inside, wanting to woo Callie openly, and having her believe all his overtures are strictly for Maya’s benefit. Problem is, they aren’t. And Callie wishes they weren’t…

Her internship boss urges Callie to consider another job, out in California, so Callie thinks she’s doomed at her dream job, even if she gets her credit fixed. There’s a whole lot of sexual tension in this episode, but it’s still innocent–only a few kisses exchanged between the main players. Plus, though Callie’s practically an adopted child to Dean’s parents, they are overjoyed to welcome Callie officially into their family as Dean’s Girl. It provides a lot of tension.

They Learned From BACKSTROKES–Review and Giveaway

Hi all! Today I’m reviewing a new release from Dylan Madrid. His newest M/M romance, BACKSTROKES, is a quiet love story featuring a small town boy who “done good” but comes home for summer break in disgrace.

BackstrokesAbout the book:
After almost being expelled from a prestigious Chicago music conservatory for a prank gone wrong, twenty-two-year-old pianist Crawford Paul returns home to Northern California for what he predicts will be another boring summer. Concerned his scholarship is now at risk, Crawford accepts the only job he can find: accompanying a glamorous seven-year-old named Isabella to a community swimming pool for lessons. There, Crawford is befriended by a nanny named Nina, an aspiring fashion designer who finds it difficult to hide her disdain for children.

When Crawford meets Armando Leon, a lifeguard and Isabella’s swimming instructor, he accepts Armando’s offer to help him overcome his fear of water by way of private swimming lessons. As friendship turns into a summer affair, their lust for one another turns to love. When Crawford receives a chance of a lifetime audition, he is torn between returning to Chicago or staying in California to start a new life with Armando. As the end of the summer inches closer, Crawford and Armando fear they will be separated forever.

How’s about a little taste:

Crawford arrived five minutes past midnight. The temperature had dropped, a slight chill in the night air.

Armando was standing in the center of a circle of light, a white moonlike glow cast from a streetlamp outside of the pool building. He smiled when he saw Crawford and was still

smiling as they met in the ring of light.

“I didn’t think you’d come,” Armando said.

“Then you don’t know me very well,” Crawford told him.

“I’d like the chance to change that.”

“What do you have planned?”

“How daring are you?” Armando asked.

“Be careful,” Crawford said. “The last time I was dared to do something I was almost expelled from school.”

Armando smiled. “Have you always been this rebellious?”

Crawford laughed a little. “I’m actually not,” he said. “Until I spray painted a wall and got caught, I’d never done anything wrong or rebellious in my life.”

“I don’t want to be a bad influence on you.”

Crawford stepped forward. He kissed Armando’s neck and said, “Too late.”

Minutes later, they crawled through a hole in the fence near the pine trees. Except for moonlight and spill-off from streetlamps, the pool area was dark.

This place looks completely different at night. Creepy.

“You look scared,” Armando said.

“You know how I’m afraid of water?” he said. “I have a similar fear of dark places.”

“I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise.”

They stood together on the edge of the pool, staring down at the deep end at their feet. To Crawford’s surprise, Armando started to undress. Within seconds, he’d stripped down to nothing but a pair of boxers.

Crawford kicked off his shoes and peeled off his socks. He wiggled his toes against the cool concrete. He slipped off his jean jacket and then his T-shirt. All that remained were his favorite pair of khaki shorts.

“What are we going to do?” Armando asked.

Crawford was confused by the question. “About what?”he asked.

“Us. The end of summer,” said Armando. “It will be here before we know it. Everything worked out for you. I know you’ll be going back to school soon.”

Crawford nodded. “In five weeks.”

He could hear the hurt in Armando’s words. “That’s all we have left together?”

I’m not sure what he’s asking me. I wish I knew how to answer his question.

“I don’t know,” he said, because it was the truth.

The hope returned to Armando’s voice. “You mean you’ve thought about staying?”

“Yes,” said Crawford, thinking back for a brief moment to the conversation he’d had with his mother days before. “I just don’t know how.”

Armando reached for his hand again and squeezed it tight. “Crawford, I would never ask you to give up your dream for me,” he said. “I know how much you love music.”

Crawford took a breath before he said the words he’d been dying to say for weeks. “But I also know how much…I love you.”

The world stopped for a second. Everything was still. The branches of the trees. The chain link fence. The smooth surface of the dark pool. The air between them.

He saw tears forming in Armando’s eyes. “You just said…wow…,” he stammered. “I love you, too.”

Crawford grinned and let out a loose laugh. “Say it again,” he said.

Armando smiled and asked, “You want me to?”

“Yes, but even louder this time,” he said. “Maybe Shelley’s still in her office and she’ll hear you.”

“I don’t care if the whole world does.”

“You sure about that?”

“More certain than anything in my entire life.” Armando reached for Crawford, pulling him into his arms. Their bodies touched and the sensation of skin on skin felt electric.

My Review:
After three years of social isolation, virtuoso pianist Crawford Paul commits vandalism–goaded by his bullying peers. Now, his scholarship is forfeited, and he is facing expulsion from the prestigious conservatory where he’s been studying. Unfortunately, returning to his tiny hometown of Harmonville in Northern California for the summer only compounds Crawford’s misery.

He was meant to break out of Harmonville–that’s what his parents and mentor, Alston told him to do, anyway. So, he feels like an utter failure for returning. He wallows, a bit, until his mom gets him a job giving piano lessons. Well, sort of. Actually he’s hired as a pseudo nanny to a sassy 7 y/o swimming phenom, Isabella, who thinks Crawford is a total ‘lame-o’ for not being able to swim.

Crawford’s ‘job’ is to bring Isabella to the community pool every afternoon for free swim and team practice. It is here that Crawford reconnects with his town. And, Isabella’s coach, Armando. Armando’s a year younger than Crawford, but he’s had his eye on the pianist since junior high when Crawford had played accompaniment for his dance class recitals. Having the opportunity to captivate Crawford, for whatever time they can share is, well, huge for Armando.

Having been such a pariah all his life, Crawford’s not good at opening up, and he recognizes that he’s in Harmonville (perhaps) temporarily. Should he pursue a relationship, knowing he’ll be even more lonely with the loss?–that’s a big worry for Crawford.

Then, he looks at Isabella’s mother. She’s living with a disease that could claim her at any time–yet she lives out loud. It’s the kind of example Crawford takes to heart, and it is clear that his Summer Of Shame is soon to be the best part of his life.

This book is a tender, thoughtful redemption story, that has a dash of romance. Okay, the romance is a big part, but this is not a graphic, sweaty-grappling-bodies, F-Bomb-dropping, Big O tale. It’s a story that any reader of gay fiction could enjoy, IMHO, because the story of Crawford’s return to Harmonville is universal: the small-town community that he so detested as a kid is now the welcoming, soul-replenishing shelter that Crawford needs. He reconnects with his best friend, meets his first love, and finally SEES the loving atmosphere he had blocked out in his singular focus on his music.

It changes him. Suddenly, the most important thing isn’t leaving Harmonville, but finding a way back–permanently–without sacrificing his dreams.

I really enjoyed this book. The language is terrific, with a smooth pace and constant movement. Crawford is a responsible character. He is insightful, and calm, and has an appreciable wit. I loved how he really brought the community together for a common cause, and how he opened his heart and soul and found his love returned many times over.

I WANT IT THAT WAY–Review and Giveaway

IWITW BT Banner

Hi all! Today I’m part of a blog tour for Ann Aguirre’s newly released novel I WANT IT THAT WAY. This atypical New Adult Romance is a slow burn with a simmering love story.

IWantItThatWayAbout the Book:

Nadia Conrad has big dreams, and she’s determined to make them come true. But between maintaining her college scholarship and working at the local day care to support herself, dating’s the last thing on her mind. Then she moves into a new apartment and meets the taciturn yet irresistible guy in 1B….

Daniel Tyler has grown up too fast. Becoming a single dad at twenty turned his life upside down—and brought him heartache he can’t risk again. Now, as he raises his four-year-old son while balancing a full-time construction management job and night classes, the last thing he wants is noisy students living in the apartment upstairs. But one night, Nadia’s and Ty’s paths cross, and soon they can’t stay away from each other.

The timing is all wrong—but love happens when it happens. And you can’t know what you truly need until you stand to lose it.

“A tender, sweet, and sexy story about how life—and falling in love—can never be planned.”

—Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You

IWITW-6

My Review:
Nadia is a straight-laced college junior at Mt. Albion College in Michigan, far from her small Nebraska hometown. Her dream is becoming a special education teacher. She keeps her grades up, striving always to do well enough to keep her scholarship and make her hardworking parents proud. The day she (and three roomies) move into their apartment, Nadia meets the man she secretly calls Hot Ginger.

Ty, as he is REALLY called, is a little older, twenty-four, and very much the professional man. Yes, suits and ties seems to turn Nadia on. A lot. But, Ty has something serious going on in his life–he’s a single parent to his four year old son, Sam–and he’s unwilling to bend his life plans, completing his college degree in architecture and being an amazing father, for anyone. Certainly not Nadia.

Well, at first, anyhow.

Thing about plans? They are made to changed. I think that’s the take home message of this book: that it’s okay to take risks and alter plans when life puts the right people in your life.

Nadia works part-time for a daycare center. When Ty needs help looking after Sam, she recommends it. Then she gets shifted into Sam’s class. The two bond. And on the side, Nadia and Ty bond, too. But Ty insists on keeping his budding relationship with Nadia completely separate from Sam. They indulge in some sexy nights when Sam stays with Ty’s parents, but the “friends with benefits” scenario isn’t enough for either if them…

There is a breakup. There is a makeup. There are concerned parents, and drunk roomies, and faltering friendships. Secondary characters are interesting and well-written. Nadia tells this story, and she tells it well. She is direct, and fun. I loved how matter-of-fact she was about everything, and how she allowed herself to wonder if she was making the right choices with her life, without sounding whiny.

Her first meeting with Ty is inauspicious, at best. While trying to move her sofa upstairs, aided by Lauren, one of her three roomies, Nadia tumbles down the stairs. Ty arrives and, begrudgingly, assists the two gals.

“I’m Nadia,” I said.

At first he didn’t say anything so she tried, “That makes me Lauren.”

“Ty,” he said finally, like this basic introduction was akin to signing a long-term cell contract.

Lauren started, “The guys will be back with drinks in a bit, off you want—”

“No, it’s okay. I need to get home.” If curt was a hat, he would be wearing it with jaunty disregard for our feelings.”

Not a great start for these two, for sure, but the middle is very good. De-lish smexytimes for Nadia and her Hot Ginger, Ty. The separation is believable, anguish and tears, but not a sobfest. No, Nadia copes well. She’s stalwart and steady, which makes her Ty’s perfect match. Good thing he figures that out in the end. I very much enjoyed. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced review copy.
