There were a few other people standing outside the library, waiting for it to open, when he got there. Some looked like students, same as him, while others looked like homeless people who probably just wanted to use the free bathrooms. Or maybe they would want to read—it was free entertainment, after all. Not that it mattered to him. He just had to study.

A librarian came up to the doors from inside and unlocked them, pushing them open for the patrons. The small crowd pressed into the building and then split up to head to their intended destinations. Daniel went to the reference books.

He was not prepared to see a girl asleep on the couch in that section. She had to have spent the night there, as she hadn’t come in with the rest of the crowd. So how hadn’t the librarian noticed her? He figured they’d checked the library before opening it, but maybe he was wrong.

He decided to ignore her, just let the poor girl sleep. He crouched down by the shelves and scanned one row of books, searching for the text he needed. There it was. He pulled it off, set it on a nearby table, and pulled out his laptop that held his paper.

The laptop made its usual musical jingle when he turned it on. The girl on the couch shifted and groaned. Daniel glanced over at her and only then noticed her suitcase. It was that same ugly floral suitcase that he’d seen the girl in the museum carrying. That girl who’d asked for directions to the library. As the girl now sat up, rubbing sleep from her eyes, he realized it was the same girl.

She noticed him, and her eyes widened. “Sorry!” she exclaimed. “I didn’t know anyone was here!”

“Did you sleep here?” he asked.

She stood up, stretching her arms over her head. Daniel couldn’t help but look a little lower than her arms.

“No,” she answered his question. It was clear she was lying.

My Review:
I wasn’t at all convinced I would like Layla. I knew from NOW AND THEN that she’s kinda not such a nice gal–conniving and manipulative and expects to get exactly what she wants pretty much describes her. Yet, her need to be assertive and strong actually isolates her from opportunities to build a stable relationship–at least with all the guys she knows. Sex is Layla’s way to find the intimacy she craves. And it isn’t working anymore. No, now she feels hollow and covets a relationship like sister Em’s more than ever.

After nine months of forced celibacy Layla encounters Ben Montrose. He’s big and burly and dominating and the exact opposite of what Layla usually finds attractive. He is, however, single–and she’s deprived, dammit. Ben thinks Layla’s a bit of alright, but he doesn’t want anything serious. He decides to woo her anyway, and can’t believe she doesn’t come to heel.

Guess Big Ben needed to ramp up his game. Good thing he does.

When Layla tells him she’s celibate that’s all the challenge Ben needs. He convinces Layla to spend four weeks together–the first two she dominates their ‘relationship’, the last two he will. While Layla keeps her vow, she and Ben spend a whole lot of time getting to know each other–building the intimacy she always sought. Meanwhile, Ben’s cool customer attitude is definitely overwhelmed by the vulnerability he finds in Layla.  It’s a fun and heartfelt tale of two strong people learning to give and receive love. In spite of the (almost total) celibacy, there’s plenty of sexual tension and some excellent heat nearer to the end.

I can only imagine what Thanksgiving would be like with the Caldwells. There will be plenty of good food, lots of laughter, and probably some naps when it’s all said and done.

“And Capone can come, too,” Flynn throws in to entice me further, but I’d already decided to accept.

“Okay. We’re in. Can you ask your mom what I can bring?”

“I’ll ask but I know she’ll say ‘don’t bring a thing but yourself’.”

I laugh over Flynn’s impersonation of his mom’s Irish accent. “In that case, don’t bother asking and I’ll just bring something. Maybe a pie.”

“You can cook?” Flynn asks with astonishment.

“Of course I can cook,” I tell him with indignation.

“Then how come all we ever have is pizza or bologna sandwiches when it’s your turn to cook?”

“Just because I can cook, doesn’t mean I want to. This is the twenty-first century pal… get with the times. Women have shed the chains of slavery and we no longer serve you menfolk.”

Flynn throws his head back and starts howling with laughter, then he pitches forward, holding the hand with Capone’s leash to his stomach while he laughs, with the other holding onto his hot cocoa. It’s infectious and I start laughing along with him.

He looks at me and our eyes meet.

Then it happens… there is almost a crackle in the air, like electricity is flowing between us. Flynn’s laughter immediately dies away and the smile slides from my face. The same happens to me and nothing is left in our expressions except a focused intensity on each other. It’s almost as if I can feel heat swirling all around us, and the backdrop of the world fades to black.

Until nothing is left but just Flynn and me.

I call it “The Happening” and it represents those few times when the resolve to just be friends seems to melt away into oblivion. It occurs at the weirdest of times and I have no control over it. When I’m in that moment with Flynn, I want nothing more than for him to grab me and kiss me like I was the oxygen his lungs crave. I want to strip him bare and use just my fingertips to trace every inch of skin on his body. I want to get lost… deeply lost, in Flynn.

“The Happening” hits Flynn just as hard as it hits me. I see the desire light him up from within. I feel the sexual tension pouring off him with visceral awareness, and I swear I can feel his heart moaning for me.

When “The Happening” occurs, I am powerless to fight it. In fact, if Flynn ever made a move to touch me during the event, I would completely submit to him body and soul. But thankfully, Flynn is a stronger person than I am, and he is clearly the more responsible of the two of us. He’ll usually snap out of it first, and bring me crashing back to reality.

Like he does right at this moment.

My Review:
This novella was interesting. Torrin is a world-class crew man. He’s a great photographer, and a thoroughly in love with Quinn, the daughter of the crew coach who was fired when he jumped ship to his new school.

He’s torn between staying with the girl who holds his heart and the year-long photography internship that could define his career. And, he’s rather possessive of this Quinn. Now that her dad’s out of work, she needs cash for school. Torrin’s father has pledged to pay her expenses, but Quinn is proud–she wants to make her own way.

As a nude model…for the art department.

Knowing that he’s only got weeks left before leaving on the internship, Torrin tries to convince himself he can survive without Quinn–at least until Quinn decides for him.

It’s an interesting story. I liked the male POV, thought I felt it was a little Spartan in terms of content.

 My review:

This novella follows the spicy romance that flares between a rancher and a tourist during a two week vacation. Graysen is a sheltered youngish woman–20 y/o–whose family takes a trip to White Pine Ranch. It’s clear the Beaufort’s are a loving family, but Graysen feels more than smothered by the constant togetherness.

Still, finding a delicious hunk of man is hardly something to cry over–so she doesn’t. At. All.

Colt finds Graysen to be the perfect picture of a modern gal and he’s overcome with more than simple lust. He sees the writing on the wall–no woman like Graysen would ever stick around a Wyoming cattle ranch for long–but frankly, he doesn’t care. He’s got to have her anyway he can.

And boy howdy–does he.

This one is a steamer.

As Colt and Graysen become more and more connected, her family tries harder and harder to step between them. In the end, it seems HEARTBREAK RANCH is aptly named, but it seems there is an HEA after all…

HEARTBREAK RANCH will appeal to readers who enjoy horseback romances, hot cowboys and blushing virgins who can’t wait to be ridden long and hard. It’s got a whole lotta smexy, so, um, enjoy?

My review:
Here’s how it all starts:  Coffee. While fetching coffee for her lecherous boss, Em takes a tumble spilling the brew all over herself and another customer–her childhood neighbor and school-girl crush, Cole Marlowe. He’s moved back to Chicago much the same as Em has. Cole isn’t looking for anything serious–he’s busy working up the partnership ladder at his law firm, but he can’t deny his attraction to Em’s unassuming nature and luscious figure.

And Em? For her, Cole has been this untouchable dream for sooo long–it’s as if she’s afraid to burst that precious soap bubble memory of her pining days. Plus, she’s just getting her career off the ground and doesn’t need complications like a relationship. Cole, he’d be a major complication, mostly because their mothers have pretty much planned on Cole marrying Em’s beautiful older sister, Layla, who always outshined Em…and Layla has her sights on Cole, as well.

But that’s the thing about love–it doesn’t listen to the bickering of parents. It cares not for the secondary alliances. It drive you to take risks, move obstacles, to Make. It. Work. Once decided, Cole is relentless. He’s fierce and vulnerable and overwhelming, and borderline stalker-y (Think ‘please-lets-tell-everyone’ NOT ‘restraining order’ sense) in his pursuit to woo Em. She holds out, however, afraid that this bombshell relationship will destroy the tenuous friendship she’s built with Layla. See, Layla wasn’t the nicest older sister growing up. She hounded Em and flaunted her popularity and openly taunted Em about her Cole-worship, yet that was THEN, and now they’re pretty tight.

And, while the secret Cole hides isn’t his latent affection for Layla, it’s driving Em away nonetheless.

My review:
STRIPPED is a solid story. Abby is a young compassionate woman caring for her brother, two half-sisters and her addict mother by stripping. She’s clean–no drug use, no alcohol abuse, no easy catch–setting her wholly apart from the stripper paradigm. She respects herself and doesn’t let her history of being molested affect her. Much. Well, at least not when her mom calls her a whore. Or, when she pushes Chris–the tasty ER doc–away. Okay, then the molestation-survivorship totally kills her.

Still, Abby’s a college grad. She worked hard to get a good job that would support her family so she could quit stripping for her tuition money. She was nearly there when a colleague showed up for a bachelor party and recognized her. Pink slips suck.

Chris is kind, and attentive, and not going to date a stripper. That’s what he keeps telling himself. But he just can’t stay away. He’s wrapped up in the idea that she’s “Great…But.” So they continue to meet and he develops a sincere affection for her. Then HIS work colleagues learn of her work and show up in her club one night to torment her, making Abby feel horrid and cheap–mission accomplished for the jealous nurse who chases Chris.

Lots of fits and starts for this couple, and much drama surrounding Abby and her molester–the father of her two half-sisters. Also, the skeevy side of stripping gets loose and Abby finds herself under the careful attention of a stalker with a giant fist. Welcome to my stop on the Cephalopod Coffeehouse tour! This month’s review features ROMANCING THE BOOKWORM, a New Adult contemporary romance by Kate Evangelista.

I finished this one a couple of week’s ago, but I’ve held back on the review because I had a feeling it would end up being a fave. So, here goes:

Romancing the BookwormXavier Solomon has it bad for bookish Tamara Winters. They go to college together—not that she’d ever know. She’s always trapped in a novel. Friends with Tamara’s bestie, Ronni, Xavier devises a plan to romance this little bookworm on spring break.

At sunny Maverick Bay Tamara’s out of her comfort zone—the third floor corner of the library where she spends her days and nights reading. But when Ronni begs her to waitress at her brother’s restaurant on the beach, Tam just can’t say no. Besides, she’s got a suitcase full of fiction to keep her busy. That is, until delish Xavier sweeps across her coastline.

In champion romantic hero form, Xavier plans little interludes for Tamara to experience–with him–all in the name of turning her head. Does it work?

Comme ci, comme ca.

As with all plans, there are small and large snafu’s—none-the-least of which is the appearance of Zander, Xavier’s hard-partying step-brother, who is by turns a cad and a competitor. His constant challenges cause Xavier to enter the surfing competition if only to take Zander out. Meanwhile, Tamara gets caught in the undertow between Xav, Zander and Ronni, and Xavier’s big romancing ends up as a near wipe out.

The dual viewpoint (which I adore) gives a clear window to the hopes and fears of these two romantic souls. It’s a fun romp with great repartee. I loved watching Tamara break free of her shell, and Xavier is such a gentle love interest. *swoon*

For a New Adult title, the tone is light and the pace is right. It’s got some spice as well. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes a good romance.
