Excerpt:
He had a large mix of alternative and rap music, and mostly male singers, so when I hit a country CD with a blonde on the cover I held it up.
“Taylor Swift?” I asked.
“What?” A red flush crept into his cheeks. “I had a crush on her.”
I looked at the cover. Maybe that was his secret. Maybe he was into blondes. What if I was an experiment to see if they really did have more fun? My dark chestnut hair was about as far from Goldilocks as it could get.
He reached for the CD, but I raised my arm over my head before he could grab it.
“I was young,” he said, lunging forward and missing my hand.
“And you’re so old and wise now,” I teased, moving the CD behind my back.
He grabbed for it, his body practically on top of mine as he tried to catch my hand. I leaned back, laughing.
“Maybe we should play it,” I said, squirming to keep him from being able to reach it.
He wrapped an arm around my back, pulling me closer. “Let’s not.”
We were a jumbled mass of arms and legs. His belt buckle rubbed the bare skin of my stomach, and his neck was in perfect kissing distance. My gaze traveled to his lips. His close proximity had me forgetting I was winning the game of keep-away…

Sixteen-year-old Madison has just embraced her magical powers. The trick now is learning how to control them. But being a witch does have its benefits. With a simple spell, Madison instantly conjures the help she needs around the house. Or so she thinks. Her idea of “help” invites trouble of its own as a pair of dangerous yet enticing beings enter her life. When a classmate disappears soon afterwards, Madison discovers she’s the next victim of a threat she’s powerless to resist…and
there’s nothing it won’t kill to make her surrender.

Caught in the crossfire between two dashing but deadly creatures, Madison must figure out which one to trust and how to rid her world of the other—before one of them destroys her and everyone she cares about.

Excerpt:
“Does it hurt?” My fingertips lingered on the smooth, pearly white scar on Isaac’s chin.
We sat on the couch in his family room, me straddling his lap. He brushed a stray strand of hair out of my eyes with his thumb.
“No.”
“It’s cold,” I said, amazed that the skin there never warmed to match the rest of him.
“You really want to talk about my scars? I have one on my side too.” He lifted his shirt, revealing a salmon-colored blemish along his lower ribcage. “I got this one jumping a fence when I was nine. Didn’t quite make it.” He pulled the waist of his jeans down next, just low enough for me to see the rope-like muscles that ran alongside his hip bone. “And I got this one when I was eleven. Tried jumping my bike over one of those workhorses. Back tire caught on the orange light. Bike stopped; I didn’t. Flew right over the handlebars. I have another one on my thigh.” His fingers went to the button on his jeans.
“I’ll take your word for it,” I said, my hand catching his.
My cheeks grew warm, and his gaze moved to my lips.

DARK HALO is Tempting…

Dark Halo (Angel Eyes, #3)How can a person refuse a gift from Lucifer?

The Great Deceiver has only had one person in history deny his temptation—and we all know what happened to Him.

So, really it’s no shock that Brielle accepts Lucifer’s terrible gift. One designed to undermine her faith—not only in God, but in herself and the power within her.

DARK HALO, the final book in Shannon Dittemore’s ANGEL EYES trilogy, elegantly addresses temptation in all its forms. From simple deception to outright seduction, Brielle, Jake and Marco repeatedly risk loss of soul to Lucifer’s plans.  (Click for reviews of Angel Eyes or Broken Wings)

Continuing where BROKEN WINGS left us,  Jake is missing—captured by the demon Damien. He is soon joined by Olivia and Marco—and Canaan’s halo. Damien wishes to use the halo for his own purpose, but it weakens him.

Desperate with fear over Jake’s disappearance, Brielle and Kaylee set off to find him following communication from God’s Throne Room. The rescue is botched, however, allowing Damien to take Brielle and Jake to Danakil, site of a long ago battle between Lucifer and God’s host.

A sulphrous salt desert, Danakil is otherwise known as Hell on Earth. Canaan arrives to reclaim Jake, but cannot take Brielle until she has endured Lucifer’s temptation. Lucifer doesn’t want her soul…he wants her to wear his dark halo—to drown the Celestial from her vision.

Why not? For Brielle seeing the human fear and Celestial war is exhausting. She cannot even sleep without nightmares—who doesn’t want a good night’s sleep, right?

In the end, Brielle refuses his gift, but Lucifer slips the halo onto her before he disappears. Brielle’s challenge—to exist with the constant emotional overload of Celestial vision, or succumb to Lucifer’s temptation–forms the bulk of the narrative. Jake endeavors to keep Brielle sane, yet her moments of weakness are frequent and consuming.

Marco’s temptation is more personal. He promised to avenge the murder of his girlfriend, Ali. Olivia’s grandfather, Henry, is the man responsible. Among his other sins, Henry is pedophilic and ran a blackmarket baby-selling operation. Seems like a no-brainer to snuff his life, IMHO, but that’s not within God’s plan. And, while Marco isn’t particularly devout, he has learned a thing or three about his soul, thanks to Jake and Canaan.

By uncovering Ali’s story we learn a great deal about Jake’s origins, and the connections between Olivia, Marco, and Brielle’s mother, Hannah. Dittemore’s deft hands build tenuous connections into strong plot lines that engage the mind and heart.

What this story excels at:  revelation of story through multiple view points. The prose is spectacular and the decisions are meaningful and universal. What person out there hasn’t blamed a higher being for mortal woes? Who among us has never felt an overwhelming need for peace, at any cost?

DARK HALO is YA paranormal fiction suitable for all teens and up. The trilogy is enchanting, and a wonderful selection for readers who enjoy faith-based fiction. For myself, I found it to be compelling without feeling preachy.

HOLD TIGHT, a fast-paced, YA paranormal romance, runs the gamut from steamy romance to chilling suspense. Cherie Colyer’s sequel to EMBRACE makes one point clear:  paranormal male leads have got it going on!

As a new witch, Madison needs to learn how to control her powers.

Every time she kisses Isaac the magic within her strikes out. Bam! And folks, electro-shocked lips are NOT attractive.

Unfortunately, with schoolwork, household chores, and caring for her younger brother Chase while dad works, Madison’s practice time is next-to-nil. And she’d like to really kiss Isaac—preferably without the painful burns.

So she steals a spell from Isaac’s book. Just a small one. To summon a helper faerie.

This simple, selfish act unleashes the biggest karmic ass-kicking Madison could have ever imagined.

Poor Madison!

At first she thinks all is okay. A beautiful faerie arrives and cleans her house. Madison even befriends Brea—lending her clothes so she can explore the human realm. But Brea didn’t arrive alone. Her brother Reed came, too. And Reed wants Madison—badly. See, getting Madison to choose him over Isaac would be Reed’s ultimate revenge after their stand-off months before.

Reed’s plan is simple:  trick Madison into consuming addictive Fae food and then yank her off to the Faery court…forever. Fighting off Reed’s advances requires all of Madison’s strength and Isaac’s ingenuity.  But, Reed didn’t settle for a single-front attack, he’s tempting Chase as well. Madison realizes this just before crashing the family car and injuring Chase. In desperation, Madison enlists the aid of a crossroads demon to save her brother’s life.

Reed’s seduction of Madison escalates and her coven’s attempts to expel him are fruitless. Will Madison have no choice except to leave her family and love behind?

By holding tight to those she loves, Madison develops the strength to defeat Reed.

Flying With BROKEN WINGS

Broken WingsBrielle Matthews has learned seeing the handiwork of God’s creation can be a bit overwhelming.

BROKEN WINGS, the second in the Angel Eyes trilogy by Shannon Dittemore, returns Brielle to the role of heroine. (See my review of ANGEL EYES here)

Picking up six months after ANGEL EYES, Brielle, Kaylee and Jake have just graduated high school. Stratus is celebrating the opening of a new community center, spearheaded by Kaylee and funded by Olivia Hart’s foundation.

Brielle knows something isn’t right about Olivia–Canaan’s halo burns hot whenever she comes near, but Brielle’s even more unsettled by her father’s behavior. Seems Olivia brings out the alcoholic in her dad.

Coupled with her Celestial vision–Brielle observes Angels and Demons within the human realm–she is being haunted by dreams of her mother’s demise. Learning that her mother’s coffin was buried empty is a shock of the first order. Could she still be alive?

And why are Angels circling her home?

Meanwhile, Brielle is affected by the tar-like fear rolling off everyone she meets. It is only in worship and prayer that she sees the fear disintegrate. So why is Jake–the most devout person Brielle knows–sweating fear?

Jake’s love for Brielle shines through his steadfast gaze, yet she is stunned by his fear.  They are meant for each other–God himself gave Jake an engagement ring for her–so, what is he hiding?

In the Celestial realm, Damien has met with Lucifer and revealed his knowledge of Jake and Brielle’s gifts. He is able to garner Lucifer’s interest and secure instructions to collect them in two week’s time. Damien uses Olivia to not only capture Jake and Brielle, but also Canaan’s halo.

See, Lucifer is planning a battle, and Stratus has become Ground Zero.

Despite the bond between Jake and Brielle, doubt remains. Jake’s risky mission to discover his parentage separates them at the absolute WORST time. And, when he doesn’t return, Brielle’s fledgling faith is put to the test.

Again, Shannon Dittemore has spun a beautifully crafted story of love, faith, doubt and keeping our demons at bay. For those who enjoy paranormal fiction, BROKEN WINGS is a fantastic tale. Contemporary themes and realistic emotional content keep this story grounded firmly in the Terrestrial, with eyes to the skies and hope for a safe resolution.

The final story in this trilogy, DARK HALO, will be released next week–so readers won’t have long to wait for the conclusion. (Review for DARK HALO coming soon!)

BROKEN WINGS can be purchased (paperback or eBook) in all the right places…

A View Through ANGEL EYES

Angel Eyes (Angel Eyes, #1)Where do humans exist within the universe?

Somewhere between angels and demons, squarely within the Terrestrial according to Shannon Dittemore‘s YA paranormal ANGEL EYES.

Brielle has returned to her hometown of Stratus a shell of the graceful ballerina who left two years prior on a prestigious arts school scholarship. Instead of being the star on stage, Brielle is set to become the star-witness against Marco, the young man accused of killing her best friend Ali.

Barely able to contain her grief, Brielle has no desire to dance and struggles to attend school. Even when the new boy, Jake Shield, takes a serious interest in her.

Unknown to Brielle, forces are working both for and against her. Canaan Shield, Jake’s guardian, is an angel whose new mission is to keep Brielle safe, while the demon Damian discovers Jake and Brielle possess gifts rare among humankind.

Currently in disgrace, Damian quickly realizes Jake and Brielle would be valuable assets to Lucifer, if only he can corrupt their purpose. His role in a child-slavery business draws Brielle into danger, the same danger that killed Ali, and her new gift allows her to be the heroine of more than just her own life.

ANGEL EYES’s beautifully written prose unravels more than a forgiveness tale; it is an epic battle between goodness and evil which challenges the reader to take a new vision of the world surrounding us.

I very much enjoyed the fresh perspective. The mostly-linear plot facilitates both understanding and anticipation, especially considering the multiple points-of-view.

ANGEL EYES is the first in a trilogy. It is available for Kindle and Nook.

Excerpt #2:
Traffic was still zipping up and down Main Street, life moving on without me. I kept close to the building, in the darker shadows, as I glanced up, down, and across the street. The last thing I needed was for my guardian angel to take me by surprise again. The sidewalk was clear, and from this distance, I couldn’t see anything by the park across the street, next to Anthony’s building. I had never really registered that he lived across the street from Cemetery Park, so named because it was an active cemetery up until the early 1940s.

Sometime in the sixties, the city decided to convert it into a park, but they never moved the bodies. The place always creeped me out, especially when I saw people playing fetch with their dogs or taking a picnic with their kids, knowing they were on top of hundreds of unmarked graves. But I wasn’t prepared for what I saw that night.

Dozens and dozens of spectral entities were all around the park, obscuring the finely manicured lawn. In the last few days, I had seen other ghosts’ fleeting forms, but none as tangible as me and none returned my gaze. Here though, when I crossed the street and stood in front of the park next to Anthony’s apartment building, no less than four spirits turned their deathly gaze upon me. For a
moment, I felt as though I couldn’t move, like a mouse caught in a corner as the big angry cat hunkered down in front of it, just waiting.

Of the four staring at me, two were small girls who looked to be about nine and ten years old. They both wore plain white dresses that hung past their knees and cinched up to their necks. Their high-top black dress shoes were practically lost in the shadows. Another of the four was a war veteran. Of what war I couldn’t be sure, but he didn’t look much older than me as he glared my way. The last was an old, hunched over Chumash woman. Her bedraggled, dark hair swung down, obscuring her face from time to time as she swayed where she stood. Her face was a relief map of wrinkles, a testament to the long life she had before she died.

I wasn’t sure who to keep my eyes on; they were all glaring at me but spread out enough that I had to make an effort to look at each of them. The larger of the two girls tilted her head to the side, drawing my attention to her. Her large eyes looked black in the night. She blinked slowly, her mouth opening slightly, as she lifted one hand and crooked her pale finger, beckoning me to come. Absurdly, I felt the desire to step forward, to answer her call, just like the pull of the White Light.

I managed to keep my feet planted on the sidewalk, though my toes were dangerously close to the edge of the grass. I had the feeling that if I crossed the line of cement and desecrated ground, that tiny waif of a girl would be on me like a rabid dog on the last bone in the world. I shifted my weight and took one small step backward. I heard the howling of the lost souls milling about the grounds. The girl’s head snapped back, and her mouth opened into a terrible black maw. She screamed long and loud before she rushed for me.

Her fingers were crooked into claws and her hands stretched out as she flew across the ground in her mad rage. I flinched against the sounds she made, feeling something for the first time in days, and covered my ears. I panicked and scrambled backward, tripping over my own feet, and fell to the ground. She was nearly on top of me. I started to gather the shadows about me, ready to flee, but as she reached the edge of the grass, she slammed into an invisible wall, then bounced off and tumbled backward.

The milling mass of spirits began to shift toward us. The noise and reverberating energy drew their attention like moths to a flame. I pushed back, putting a little more distance between me and the edge of the cemetery, before I got to my feet. I dusted my hands off on my jeans out of habit and straightened my sweater. When I finally found the courage to look up again, the entire population of the cemetery was pressed close to the edge of the grass, practically looming over me. I clenched my hands into fists to keep them from shaking and lifted my chin. They couldn’t cross the line to get to me, and there was no way they would get me to do it for them. I was fine; I just had to stay on the sidewalk.

The soldier caught my attention, pulling it away from the still glaring, screaming girl in white. He stepped forward out of the crowd. A few tendrils of pale white slipped from his shoulders. He wasn’t quite at the grass line. His face was calm and sad. I watched as he inclined his head toward me in a nod, which I returned. One corner of his mouth lifted in a small half smile. I stepped forward.

He lifted his hand, his fingers splayed as if he would intertwine them with mine. I lifted my hand, opening my fingers and began to reach for him. I took another half-step forward, a few blades of grass bending over the toe of my boot.

“Shayna, no!” a voice called out like a ringing bell in the still, silent night.
